The Citizen, 2003-08-27, Page 17THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27, 2003. PAGE 17. School safety involves everyone on the road Schools will be reopening on Sept. 2 for the upcoming school year and large numbers of children will be bused, driven or will be biking or walking to school each day. One problem for parents is the large number of drivers who don't stop for buses that are picking up or dropping off students. Many of these offending drivers blame the bus driver, not the fact that they are being unobservant or running late for work or maybe an appointment. What the driver should do when seeing the bus is to think about where and when the bus is going to stop, said Sr. Const. Don Shropshall. “Are there driveways close by or are students standing near the roadway waiting to be picked up by the bus.” When meeting or approaching a stopped school bus on a highway (this means in town as well), that has its overhead red signal lights flashing, stop at least 20 metres before reaching the bus, and do not proceed until the bus moves or the overhead red signal lights have stopped flashing. Safety tips for home, school It’s that time of year when summer is officially over and children go back to school. Many need to be reminded of what is safe and what to do when things go wrong. OPP Sr. Const. Don Shropshall offers guidelines for parents to teach their children. * Walk and ride in well-lit areas, and never take shortcuts. Following all the bicycle rules, especially the one about riding on the right side of the street with traffic. * If anyone bothers you while going to and from school, get away from that person, and tell a trusted adult like your parents or teacher. If the person chases after you, cry loudly for help and run if someone followed you. * If scared or frightened, go to a safe house. Your parents can tell you which house is safe. * If someone you don’t know offers you a ride, say no. Never TALK TO YOUR PHARMACIST ... about medication safety - Every drug has a purpose. Every drug has a side effect. How do you know what’s right for you? Talk to your pharmacist. Pharmacists are the drug experts. When used properly, drugs are safe, cost effective therapy. Make sure you’re getting it right. The Canadian Pharmacists Association reminds you that your pharmacist is there for you, ready to help, anytime. - News Canada Every person who contravenes this section of the Highway Traffic Act is guilty of an offence and on conviction is liable for a first offence, to a fine of not less than $400 and not more than $2,000 and for each subsequent offence, to a fine of not less than $1,000 and not more than $4,000 or to imprisonment for a term of not more than six months or to both a fine and jail. The bus is a very safe way for children to travel to and from school. In fact, school buses are the safest vehicles on the road. Very few deaths and injuries to children involve a school bus,” said Shropshall. Several bus crashes took place in Huron last school year. No one was injured in those crashes and some of those crashes resulted in the offending vehicle being written off due to damage. Most mishaps take place outside- the bus, so here are some precautions you can take and talk over with your children. Don’t let your children arrive at the bus stop too early. They hitchhike and only accept a ride from someone if your parents have told you it is okay. * If you see someone hanging around the school or park, tell an adult you trust. Learn to give a good description. * Do not accept job offers, rides or. gifts from a stranger. People may offer or promise you a TV or modelling career. Tell your parents and let them check out the agency for you. Do not accept offers to take your photograph to make you famous. These people may be trying to take advantage of you and immediately tell someone you trust. * Do not accept offers of alcohol, cigarettes or narcotics - the effects could be dangerous to your well being. * If you go home after school. ^gg^lNGHAM FLIGHT CENTRE Wingham Flight Centre is pleased to present our Fall Schedule for Private and Recreational Pilot Ground School Classes. Make sure they know what to do if they miss the bus. If your bus stop is a long way from home, plan and discuss with your children where they can go in an emergency, like go to a block parent. If it is dark on the way to or from the bus, make sure your children are visible. Use retro-reflective tape on their clothing and void dark colours. Make sure they want well away from the roadway, and stay well back until the bus has come to a full stop, the lights are flashing and the door opens. Then look both ways before moving. Explain they must walk at least three metres (10 feet) away when crossing in front of the bus so that the driver can see them. In many cases the driver will help and give the children the nod to assist them across the roadway, so at the bus stop, students should make sure that the busdriver can always see them. Students’ responsibility on the bus covers many things which if not check to see that everything is okay before you go in. Do not answer the door when you are home alone and do not tell people you are home alone on the phone. If someone keeps calling or trying to get into your house, call the police at once. * Parents and guardians should not put your child’s name visibly on clothing, bicycles or toys. A child responds to a first name and a person using that name will not be thought of as a stranger. Know your child’s friends and be involved in your child’s activities. “Children need to remember to not be afraid to tell if someone has bothered them. Parents you are important to your children and they will follow your ideas if you take the time to sit down and talk with them before any crisis arises.” followed could result in a crash. The first rule here is that the bus driver is always in charge. Students must follow the driver's directions the first time they are given. If not, the privilege of riding on a bus can be withdrawn. Students must respect the property of others, the passengers on the bus and the bus equipment. The bus driver shall be respected by the students at all times - he is looking out for the safety of all students at all times. Students in the villages and towns will be walking and several others will be driven to school. Many crossing guards have experienced close calls.
