For the second year in a row, the
Blyth Fire Department is benefitting
from a group of people having a
good time.
The Amazing Cheap Great Race
#2 was held this past Saturday and
Sunday with donations bringing in
$536.49 for the department. Last
year’s total was just $100.
The race is the inspiration of Dave
and Fran Cook, originally intended
to be a couple of days of fun for a
bunch of adults. “We were sitting
one evening watching a stupid
reality show and began to think that
we could do something similar that
would be a lot of fun,” said Fran.
Last year, for one day,
participants, who are organized into
teams, spent a day competing in a
“car rally/scavenger hunt/ obstacle
course/ challenge.
This year the Cooks planned a
two-day event which began with the
first clue, written in Dutch, and
ended after 40 contestants
completed a variety of activities
from discovering specific
landmarks, to sawing logs, to taking
Ethel teams do well
Another summer of baseball was
wrapped up for some 50-plus young
people from Ethel and surrounding
area. All teams were playing in the
Tri-County Softball League and
ended their season with
tournaments.
The Squirt girls won the A
championship in Listowel on Aug.
16 defeating teams from Kincardine
and Varna.
Varna.
The co-ed slo-pitch team won the
B championship at Londesborough
on Aug. 9 in round-robin play.
The Pre-Mites also played well in
their tournament in Belgrave on
Aug. 9.

participants who represented their
community well. Season-ending
parties were held.
an airplane ride to find out where “X
marks the spot.”
The 10 teams were closely
matched, say the Cooks. “They were
all scheming to get around the
rules,” said Fran.
She added that it was amusing to
see what some people brought with
them. One woman packed her car
full of things she thought she might
need.
The Cooks don’t make
anticipation easy, however, as the
contest differs each year. “Nothing
is the same. Next year will be
different too as we are planning a
full day and overnight stay
somewhere,” said Dave.
Acknowledging the support of the
players who contributed much of the
money, and local businesses, the
couple say that the competitors
make it fun. ‘Dave and I have a hoot
planning this.”
Participants, which this year
included five members of the fire
department, were: Rick Elliott,
Kerry Nesbitt, Wally Pierce, Diane
Howson, Mike McDonald, Lorie
Brooks, Pat Cronin, Kim Babcock,
Anne Elliott, Jeff Howson, Crystal
The U-17 and U-15 girls year-end
tournament got underway in Blyth
July 28 with six teams competing,
Blyth, Clinton, Wingham,
Goderich, Lucknow 1, Lucknow 2.
Blyth met Goderich on July 28
and with a very strong second half
Blyth came away with a 5-1 victory.
July 29 Blyth met Clinton and
again came up with a strong game
winning 3-0.
July 30 Blyth met Wingham in the
last game of round robin. This was a
very important game.
Blyth again played very well
coming up with a much-needed 5-0
shutout. They allowed only one
good scoring chance for Wing
ham.
This guaranteed them to go to the
finals against Lucknow 2 which
also had only one goal against in
round-robin play. July 31 at 7:15
p.m. the stage was set for a very
exciting game. With the Blyth squad
controlling most of the play
Lucknow still got on the board first.
Blyth pressed on and was finally
awarded their first goal of the game.
With a 1-1 tie at the end of
regulation time it went to golden
goal overtime with 10-minute
halves. After 90 minutes this game
was still deadlocked.
With night falling a winner had to
be determined, so there was a five-
girl shootout. Each team scored
twice leaving the game now at 3-3.
Then came the sudden death
shoot-out. Anne Beth Van Dorp,
the keeper, was chosen as the first
shooter and in fine fashion put it
over the goal line off the crossbar.
With Lucknow missing the net it
gave Blyth the 4-3 victory.
Goal scorers in the shootout were
Erica Sturzenegger, Jessica Roy and
Van Dorp.
