FROM BLYTH Dave, left, and Fran Cook organizers of the Amazing Cheap Great Race #2 presented a cheque of $536.49 to Blyth firefighters Paul Kerr and Kevin Falconer, right. The money is for the department training centre building fund. Planned originally as a fun day for adults, this year’s race had 40 competitors making up 10 teams. According to the Cooks when it became apparent last year that some money could be raised the fire department was picked as a likely recipient in part because they were not aware of any other fundraiser supporting it. Cousins said the quotes were for 1.000 trees that were marked by a tree inspector and ready for harvest. All of the trees, 1,000 in total, were of a 20-inch base or needed to be cleared out because of their condition. Cousins said. However, several councillors had concerns about the suggested harvest. “If you take 1,000 trees out you’re really going to open it up for wind,” Jim Campbell said. “I would really feel better with getting the opinion of the (Huron County) tree commissioner,” deputy-reeve Murray Scott said. Scott also wondered if the trees marked would follow the regulations set in the proposed tree bylaw, which is set to pass at the next county council meeting. Cousins responded the inspector had not seen it and the marked trees were under the old bylaw. “The prices are only good for 30 days so we have to move pretty quick,” Cousins said. The quotes closed Aug. 31, Cousins said, and the deadline would be past by the next council meeting. Campbell asked Cousins to contact the two highest bidders for the extension until the Sept. 2 meeting.*** Top quality new crop APPLES at the farm or delivered Competitive prices BLYTHE BROOKE ORCHARDS 1 mile west of Blyth For more information call 523-9338 or 482-9371 Council officially declared the municipality a tourism area at last Thursday’s meeting. Clerk-administrator John Stewart explained the declaration allowed businesses to open on statutory holidays. On Canada Day two stores wondered about the regulations for opening on the holiday but learned they would not be able as they were not exempt under the current regulations. While there are a number of current exemptions, Stewart explained grocery stores were not among them. By declaring North Huron a tourist area, businesses will now be allowed to open on Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day and Thanksgiving. *** Cousins said the Community Centre needs a new hot water heater to replace an exhausted system which is on its last leg. “You can’t put anymore bandaids on it,” Cousins said. Cousins said the project couldn’t wait and figures could be shifted in the department’s budget in order to pay for the new water heater. However, councillor Jeff Howson said the expense fell under an unforeseen expense. Council agreed and said they would get quotes on a new system. *** Blyth French Fries * Wings & Fries * Chicken Strips & Fries Onion Rings * Battered Veggies Battered Mushrooms * Pizzas . _____________ ____________j The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 420 ‘VdeCcomes Atf ‘Threshers Visitors dr "Jammers" The week of September r to September 6th Hours of Operation Mon. & Tues., Sept. 1st & 2nd ~ 3 pm to 10 pm Wed. & Thurs., Sept. 3rd & 4th ~ 2 pm to 12 am Fri. & Sat., Sept. 5th & 6th ~ 12 noon to 12 am On The Menu At The Branch Stewart said he and the chief building inspector Byron Ellis met with the Mennonite group looking at building a parking shed.
