The golden calf being used in this year’s production of Bamboozled: He Won't Come In From The Bam, Part II arrived last Tuesday afternoon and was donated by the Paul and Lorraine Franken family who live near Blyth. The calf, who has been named Willie, stays at Murray Siertsema when it’s not in rehearsal. Bamboozled director Paul Thompson, along with his welcoming committee, walked the calf across the main street to The Garage Theatre where it was introduced to Caroline Gillis, who plays Frieda, Janet Amos, who plays Rose, Bob Nasmith, who plays Anton, and Ted Johns who wrote the play and stars as the beloved Aylmer/ “Some [calves] are quite smart and learn very quickly and then get bored. . . Ted Johns reprises his role of Aylmer, and his wife Janet Amos returns as his on-stage spouse Rose. Bamboozled also stars Caroline Gillis, John Jarvis and Bob Nasmith. Willy the Golden Calf and Ribsy the piglet round out the cast. Artistic director Eric Coates is thrilled to bring Aylmer and his family back to Blyth. ‘Ted Johns is a strong voice for farmers everywhere. Johnson was last at the Festival in 1999 when he played the lead roles of Richard II in Richard II and Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. Other Stratford roles include Reverend Shannon in The Night of the Iguana, Yasha in The Cherry Orchard, Aulolycus in The Winter's Tale, Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet. Recently, Johnson starred opposite Cynthia Dale in Syncopation at Toronto’s Winter Garden Theatre (2002) and played Kerensky in the television series Largo Winch. He is the winner of a 2000 Gemini Award for his performance as Oliver on CTV’s The City. He joins the Troilus and Cressida cast after the actor originally slated to play the role, Andy Velasquez, was injured in a cycling accident. The play, which opens Aug. 13, runs until Sept. 28 at the Tom Patterson Theatre. It also features Peter Donaldson as Ulysses, Bernard Hopkins as Pandarus and Stephen Ouimette as Thersites, with David Snelgrove and Claire Jullien in the title roles.
