The vapours
from
flammable
solvents can
easily ignite
if they come
into contact
with sparks or open flame.
They should only be useef in
well ventilated areas that are
free from all ignition sources
- including pilot lights.
With work in the fields in high
gear, tractor drivers are reminded
that the rules of the road still
apply.
Huron OPP report several
complaints regarding tractors and
farm implements on roadways being
involved in collisions or close-calls,
scaring drivers of other vehicles.
Drivers of farm implements can be
charged with careless driving,
dangerous driving, impaired driving,
failing to signal their intentions and
many other traffic offences.
All equipment must also display a
slow-moving vehicle sign as a
warning to other motorists. The sign
must be installed on the centre, rear
of the rear-most vehicle driving or
being towed along a roadway. It
must be two feet to six feet above the
road and clearly visible from not less
than 500 feet. The only case where
this does not apply is if machinery is
being driven directly across the
highway.
The sign, a triangle measuring 35
centimetres high and 30.6
centimetres wide, must be kept in
good condition and replaced once
the orange/red fluorescent colour has
faded.
These standards apply to all
vehicles being driven along a road
that cannot go at least 40 km/hr.
Exempt from this regulation are
horse-drawn vehicles driven by
people whose religious beliefs do
not permit the signs and bikes,
mopeds and disabled vehicles being
towed. Buggies must be outlined
with reflective tape visible from at
least 500 feet.
Slow-moving vehicle signs are not
permitted on mailboxes or posts.
Reflectors or tape should be used.
If a vehicle is operated on the
highway one half hour before sunset
to one half hour after sunrise or at
any time under poor weather
conditions, it must have lights
visible from 500 feet.
Machinery equipped with an
electric lighting system must have
two white lights on the front and at
least one red light on the rear. If
there is no electrical system, there
must be at least one white lamp o’"
light on the front and one red light
on the rear. 7 he red light must be on
the back of the most rear vehicle.
The lights must be visible to 500
feet.
If the vehicle and a towed item are
longer than 6.1 metres, amber or
green lights must be displayed on the
sides of ..he front vehicle and red
lights on the sides, near the back of
the rear vehicle. Ministry- approved
reflectors may be used instead of the
side-lights.
The Highway Traffic Act does not
limit the number of wagons or
trailers that can be towed, but it is
the driver’s responsibility to ensure
it is not a hazard. Each wagon or
trailer must be attached by two
separate means and have two chains.
The strength of the chains must
equal the gross weight of the towed
vehicle(s).
While the driver of a tractor or
self-propelled implement does not
need a driver’s licence, they must be
at least 16-years-old unless just
driving directly across the highway.
Vehicles should be driven on the
highway as the shoulder may not be
firm enough to withstand the weight
of the vehicle. It is not illegal to
drive on the shoulder, but is illegal to
pass another vehicle while driving
on the shoulder.
The Criminal Code of Canada
applies both on and off the road It is
illegal to drive while impaired by
alcohol or drugs. Any conviction
will result in driving prohibition for
any motor vehicle on a highway or
in a public place, including farm
implements.
Charges such as no slow-moving
vehicle sign, improper attachment,
improper lights or driving without
proper lights brings a fine of $90
plus a $20 court cost fee. Careless
driving will cost $305 plus court
costs of $80.
The fines can run as high as
$2,000 or six months in jail.
Criminal code offences result in
higher fines and longer jail terms.
