Waiting to react

U-l Is ended season on high
Midget Girls end season
The Brussels U-l 1 squad ended
their season with their best play of
the year, displaying an outstanding
effort and cohesive team work,
when they competed in the year-end
tournament in Newton, Aug. 9.
Netminder Christine Bone was
amazing throughout the two games
played, said coach Donna Prior,
stopping shot after shot in acrobatic
fashion.
In the 4-0 victory against Elma
Saturday morning, the squad
overwhelmed their opponent, taking
control of the game after first two
netter.
It was their first definitive win of
the year.
Scoring for Brussels were Emily
Prior, Gavin Bowers and Randy
Zwep with two.
Blyth II Over 18 soccer squad
loses C championship
to Brussels III in overtime
The Blyth II Over 18 soccer team
took their playoff run to the C
championship Sunday, but lost to
Brussels III in sudden death
overtime
The first of their four games in a
six-day period was held Tuesday
evening when they took on Brussels
II and were downed 3-2.
A tough Lucknow team captured
the 3-0 win Thursday night.
Cassidy Peachy and Kristen
Grobbink also played an
outstanding game, said Prior.
It was a nailbiter for Brussels
when they met Palmerston for the
second game of the day.
In spite of a tremendous effort to
the last minute and goals from Zwep
and Bowers, Brussels fell just short,
taking the the 3-2 loss.
Bone was named the team’s most
valuable player of the tournament
with Curtis White receiving honours
as the most improved and Adrian
Menzie recognized for his
dedication.
The team ended the year with a
celebration at the home of assistant
coach Alicia Deitner and they gave
thanks to all those who help this
year.
Saturday saw the fortunes turn for
Blyth when they were victorious
over Goderich with a 3-2 final.
This put them in the C final
against Brussels III. In spite of
playing shorthanded due to injuries,
they put up a fight, taking the game
into overtime with a 3-3 tie.
However, with the sudden death
rule applying in the two, 10-minute
periods, Blyth took the loss.
On Aug. 15 and 16, the Brussels
Midget girls participated in their
year-end tournament which was held
in Holmesville.
Their first game was against St.
Pauls on the Friday night. Lesley
Pepper was on the mound for the
seven-inning game, striking out 14.
The game remained scoreless until
the third inning when St. Pauls
scored a single run on two hits.
Brussels answered back when Jenna
Fischer waited out a walk and scored
on a triple by Catrina Josling to tie
the game.
St. Pauls would take the lead in the
fourth on the lead-off single and and
a double.
Brussels would hold off St. Pauls
for the remainder of the game.
Brussels had runners in scoring
position in the next three innings but
they were unable to cross the plate.
The final score was 2-1 for St. Pauls.
Brussels would be back at the park
Saturday morning to play Fullarton.
Following a two-hour rain delay the
game was underway. Pepper and
Lisa Black shared the pitching duty.
Outlaws, Division champs
The North Perth Midgets brought
home the Tier 2 Zone 8 trophy from
the final game of the playoffs last
week in Kurtsville.
Elora started the scoring with two
goals in the first period before the
Outlaws kicked in and started
playing more offensively. Ashton
Nichol and David Fitzgerald took
control of the first period from the
scoring aspect with Nichol scoring
the first Outlaw goal, Fitzgerald the
second, Nichol the third and
Fitzgerald the fourth with Nichol
and Xavier O’Krafka assisting.
Jordan Doig rushed down the
U-15s win championship
After finishing the regular season
in fourth place out of eight teams,
the Brussels U-l5s peaked at the
right time, going undefeated during
the year-end tournament and
capturing the North Perth
championship.
The tournament started with two
weeknight games against Listowel
teams with Brussels capturing each
closely-fought contest. The
U-9s defeat parents
The Brussels U-9 soccer team
ended the season with a contest
against the parents.
The parents put up a great
defensive game but the kids showed
no mercy. Some of the parents, one
being Kevin Kellington, showed off
some of his technical moves by
wrestling and carrying around some
of his U-9 opponents. Scorers for
the parents were Dave Rapson, Paul
Stevenson and Alan Stewart.
Honourable mention goes to goalies
Steve Rath well and Murray Bone.
Even with the hard work
exhibited from the parents and the
very “technical moves” they
displayed the U-9 team pulled
through and won the game 4-3.
Great fun was had by all.
Coach was Murray Bone. His
assistants were MaryAnn Bone and
Pepper had 10 strikeouts.
Brussels got on the bases early in
the first inning. Pepper waited out a
walk and was advanced on a bunt by
Fischer who also outran the throw.
Black would fill the bases on a
single. Josling would clear the bases
with a triple to put Brussels ahead by
three.
Brussels added another run in the
second on a single by Candice Ross
who would score on a triple by
Candice McLellan.
Brussels bats came out swatting in
the third. Singles by Pepper, Fischer,
Black, Lacey McCall, Josling,
Ashley Keffer and Katie Aitchison
would see seven runs cross the plate.
In the fourth Brussels added
another run on singles by Pepper and
Sarah McDonald.
In the fifth another run would
cross the plate on singles by Josling
and Aitchison.
Fullarton remained scoreless until
the sixth where they scored three
runs on one hit and two errors. The
final score was Brussels 13-,
Fullarton, three.

skills learned from the Toronto
Rock’s Colin Doyle and scored his
first goal of the game with assistance
from Tyler DeVos and goafie Liam

Justin Erb received a long high
pass from Doig and put the dark one
past the Elora goalie for the seventh
goal of the game. Tell scored with
help from Nichol before Elora was
allowed their lone goal of the second
period. Cory Chapman ended the
scoring in the period with help from
tournament was completed on
Saturday, Aug. 16, with the first
game against a disciplined team
from Drayton that had defeated
them in both their regular season
games.
Brussels players avenged those
losses when it counted, edging
Drayton 3-1.
They next faced Howick which
had placed first during the regular
Trish McKay.
Rose Kellington helped at the
year-end tournament.

Crediton squad. Pepper got 17
strikeouts on the mound for
Brussels.
Brussels came out swinging in the
first inning. Pepper reached first on a
walk and would score on a double
by Black. McDonald and McCall
would reach base and score on a
double by Josling.
Brussels held Crediton to no runs
until the bottom of the third. They
would score three runs on four hits
to tie the game. Crediton added two
more runs in the sixth on two hits
and two walks.
Brussels never gave up and in the
top of the seventh down by two
would load the bases with two out
on hits by McLellan, Aitchison and
Keffer.
Heather Little came to the plate to
keep the team alive but was put out
on a caught fly ball. The final score
was 5 - 3 for Crediton.
The coaches would like to
congratulate the girls on having a
great season.

The home team continued to tally
up the points with Tell and Doig
getting hattricks, Brad DeBlock
added one of his own and Chapman
scoring in the last 14 seconds of the
game.
Assists in the third period were
earned by Chapman, Brett Hunt,
Fitzgerald and DeBlock.
Michelle Yenson presented the
team with the C division trophy.
Provincials were cancelled on the
weekend due to the power failure.
They will hopefully be rescheduled
to this weekend.

into the championship game due to
their undefeated status during
tournament play.
The championship game was
against a strong squad from
Wallace. Brussels players showed
their true mettle, battling back from
an early deficit to gain the lead late
in this long, hot game, winning the
contest 2-1 and capturing the North
Perth championship.
Brussels coaches commended
their players for exceptional effort
and teamwork during the gruelling
tournament play.
