Seasons of the Spirit begins for local young people By Sarah Mann Citizen staff Blyth resident Judy Gleave is really excited, and with good reason too. Gleave is the head of Christian Education at the Blyth United Church and is bringing a new program to the area that will get children, especially teens, involved with spirituality. The program, called Seasons of the Spirit, began after the need for a non-denominational Christian resource was realized. In 1998. the Seasons Theological and Educational Foundations paper was collaboratively drafted and has guided this program ever since. “Biblical ancestors formed their identity as God’s people from stories of faith and participating in rituals associated with them,” said Gleave. “. . . Stories and rituals of our Biblical heritage help us form our identity as Christian’s in today’s world.” Seasons of the Spirit uses Bible reading from the Revised Common Lectionary and seasons of the church year, to provide a unified structure for worship, learning and service. “The lectionary and seasons of the church year help connect our past, present, and future as God’s people,” said Gleave. This collaborative Christian resource, Seasons of the Spirit, also uses creativity, insight, theology and the skills of many people from a variety of denominations to explore the meaning and mystery in the Bible. What’s different about this program is its use of science and technology, the arts and the Bible to nurture faith by engaging the mind and using imagination. “This program takes what kids love, science and technology and the arts, and uses it to get them involved with church,” Gleave said. Seasons of the Spirit “sends us into the contemporary world [and uses] its current events, issues, knowledge and discoveries as an arena to test, share, and live out our faith,” said Gleave. Teachers for this new program are needed so anyone interested in participating or for more information contact Judy Gleave at 523-4748. As the church family is now on their summer schedule and had attended Brussels United Church during the month of July, they’re pleased to welcome members of that congregation to worship at Melville during August. After the welcoming, Margaret Mclnroy sang the solo, He, accompanied by organist Mary Douma. The scripture reading by Rev. Neilson was Isaiah 43: 1-6; 1 Corinthians 3: 16-23; and Luke 3: 1- 10. The offering was collected by Dave McCutcheon and Brian Armstrong, during which time Margaret Mclnroy sang the hymn In The Garden. Rev. Neilson’s sermon was entitled Partnership. It was about the various roles of teachers and how all should be teachers at times. The flowers at the front of the church were placed there by Gordon and Julia Mitchell, in memory of her father Donald Street. Congregants thoughts were with Frank Cardiff, who is still in hospital.
