WALTON

Many Waltoners have been
travelling the last few weeks.
Catching up with Joan Perrie, she
was three and a half weeks in
Gibson, B.C., the home of the old
TV series. The Beachcombers.
It was a working holiday as she
was helping her friend run a bed and
breakfast. She was the maid and her
duties included the dishes, setting
tables and making the beds, etc.
In her free time she took
photography lessons.
She was able to spend two days on
Gambier Island. It is a mountainous
island where they are still vested in
the old ways of life.
She visited five artists including
potters, woodworkers and painters.
She reports a really interesting time
and it is a beautiful part of Canada.
Joan and her friend culminated the
visit with a birthday dinner at a
fancy restaurant for both of them, a
treat for the maid and cook.
An interesting coincidence, was
that a couple staying at the B&B
were on their way to Walton to stay
at Mary Humphries’ bed and
breakfast. Small world.
Not travelling quite so far were the
Bernard family and friends. They
were off to Richmond Hill to the
home of Sal and Anne (Watson)
Carrieri, Wonderland and the
Hockey Hall of Fame.
There were 17 to invade the home
and enjoy the weekend including
Carmen. Mary. Steven, Michael and
Christopher Bernard. Rachel, Krista
and Matt Shortreed. Jennifer
McClure and eight other friends.
They left Friday and were home
Sunday night exhausted from their
fun weekend.
Attending the SARS concert from
the area were rhe Cochranes, Ashley
Halley and friends and Jennifer
McClure and friends. They had a
great time but report a lot of younger
people left during the Rolling Stones
performance. Not everyone
appreciates “our generation” of
music.
Attending the theatre in Grand
Bend were Leona McDonald and
Isabel Wheeler. They saw Carousel.
Returning home from a great
motor trip to the west were Valerie
Shortreed and Mac and Janet
Webster. They caught the ferry at
Ludington, Michigan and crossing
to Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
They travelled through Minnesota
and on into Manitoba where they
saw flax and canola fields in flower.
There were plenty of gophers
(smaller than groundhogs) eating the
crops. Saskatchewan has been very
dry.
Travelling to Claresholm, Alberta,
they stayed at a bed and breakfast
out in the country where they could
see how the fields are irrigated.
When they arrived in Calgary they
took a tour of the City Centre. At the
Calgary Stampede they saw the
chuckwagon races and the
grandstand show at night. It was put
on by the young Canadians of the
Calgary Stampede called Riding the
Winds of Change. There were lots of
music, dancing and great fireworks.
They also took in other events of
the rodeo like cow milking, bull
riding, bareback riding, barrel
racing, horse pull and cattle cutting
with horses.
Travelling to Drumheller, they
stopped at the Badlands and saw the
HooDoo’s and the Royal Tyrell
Dinosaur Museum.
They visited with Jack Webster at
his ranch near Big Valley. He is a
relative of Mac'and Janet’s who took
them fc a tour of the small town of
Big Valley and into Stettler for a
steam train ride, which took them to
Big Valley.
Next was northern Alberta, Jasper,
the Athabasca Glacier and a walk on
the Columbia ice fields. They saw
Lake Louise and Banff.
Heading to B.C. and Vancouver
they stayed with Janet’s cousin Lida.
They took a tour on the skytrain,
visited Stevenson and the Old
Market, the Lynn Canyon Swinging
Bridge and went up Grouse
Mountain on the skyride. They
caught the ferry to Nanaimo and
toured Chemainus, Victoria and
Butchart Gardens.
They took the ferry to the USA
and Port Angeles, Washington.
Touring through the states of Idaho,
Montana, Wyoming and South
Dakota, they stopped at Mt.
Rushmore. At Crazy Horse, there are
carvings in progress.
It was then on through the states of
Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana
and Michigan before coming back to
Ontario and home.
A new baby has arrived at Walton
Road. Jeff and Sarah Grobbink are
the proud parents of a little girl
named Lily. Congratulations to them
and first-time grandparents Henry
and Maryann Grobbink.
The Walton Brewers took part in
the Brussels fastball tournament.
They lost 8-4 to the K-W Pride in
their opening game and defeated St.
Pauls 10-5 and the Brussels
Bulldogs 9-5 before being
eliminated by the Monkton
Muskrats in a 2-0 loss on Monday.
Taking a horseback vacation were
Judy Emmnch, Anne Halley, Rob
Little, Renata Bonstrup, John,
Ruthie, Hannah and Emily Uyl.
They gathered with about 100
members of the Chesley Saddle
Club at a cattle ranch near Cape
Croker. They would trail ride in the
mornings and stop for a picnic lunch
and ride in the afternoon and return
for supper in the evening.
They camped and enjoyed
campfires and entertainment.
Unfortunately, Ruthie Uyl of Blyth
had a small mishap when riding and
suffered an' injury. They still
managed to have a good time,
however.
A touch of sadness for the village
with the news of Alex Gulutzen’s
sudden death. Alex and wife Pauline
(Thamer) lived in the village for a
time and have been settled in
Westfield for a number of years.
Our condolences to Pauline and
children Bill, Darlene and Charles
and their families. The funeral
service was held at Duff’s United
Church on Tuesday.
It was a triple celebration at the
farm of Jack and Marianna Ryan on
the weekend. They celebrated 35
years of wedded bliss, Marianna 55
years of life and Jack 65 years and
the monthly pension cheque.
Hooray!
They also celebrated the fact it
was 50 years ago that the Grobbink
family came to Canada when
Marianna was only five. They had
family, friends and neighbours join
Crash
A section of North Line (County Rd. 12), near Canada Company Road, was closed to traffic
on Friday as emergency workers worked at the scene of a collision involving a pickup truck
and transport truck. The Ministry of Environment was also called to the scene after one of the
transport’s fuel tanks ruptured and spilled diesel fuel into the ditch. One man, Brian Workman,
remains a patient in London as a result of his injuries. (Sarah Mann photo)
them for a barbecue. Ken Scott’s
orchestra provided music and
entertainment.
Jack and Marianna’s children
include son Joe and wife Rhonda,
son Steve and friend Darlene,
daughters Monica and friend Kevin
and Peggy and husband Terry.
Many members of the Grobbink
and Ryan families attended and had
a great time.
Visiting with Anne and Gerry
Ryan for the weekend were Gerry’s
sister Joan and husband Don
McDonald from Montreal. Their
children Grant and Monica, Mark
and Isobel and Heather and Duncan
also were around for the weekend to
attend Jack and Marianna’s
celebrations. They travelled from
Toronto and Montreal and stayed
with Joe and Rhonda Ryan.
Congratulations to MGM
Townsend Tire on the grand opening
of their new offices. I saw many
Walton faces enjoying the
celebration and the barbecue.
An accident involving local
Walton men on Friday afternoon
closed the county road for quite a
while. Involved were Steve Dennis
with nephew Adam Forbes and
Brian Workman. Brian is in hospital
in London with serious injuries and
we wish him all the best in his
recovery. Steve and Adam were not
seriously injured but I’m sure badly
shaken up.
There were local young men who
headed for the French River for
some holidays and fishing. A total of
10 went and enjoyed the weekend
fishing for pike, bass, sunfish,
swimming and camping. Having a
good time were Scott McDonald,
Darryl Houston, Devon Blake, Jeff
Linton, Brian Dolmage and others.
It’s been a busy road to the crop
circle on the farm of Steve Knight.
We dropped in to see it and it’s an
unusual thing to see. People from
Mitchell even called for directions.
The birthday babies are plenty this
past couple of weeks. Having
celebrated are Jim Blake,. Ken
Rogerson, Bob Williamson, Donna
Godkin, Cathy McDonald Flaxbard,
Tyler Banks Ribey, Paul Ryan,
Jordan Shortreed, Jeanne
McDonald, Dionne, Marg Bennett,
Jennifer Grobbink, Sherry Hoegy,
Susan Carter Alexander, Jim

Godkin, Ken Huether, Erin Mitchell,
Marie Mitchell, Richard Love,
Laurie Grobbink, Darryl Houston,
Leona McDonald, Brian McGavin,

About your hospital...
The Clinton Public Hospital is implementing a new hospital information
system. The new system, MEDITECH, provides integrated software
solutions that meet the information needs of health care organizations
worldwide. The MEDITECH system will allow healthcare professionals
to have connectivity with the Stratford, Seaforth, St. Marys Hospitals and
Alexandra Marine and General Hospital. The MEDITECH rollout will
begin on August 1st, 2003 and finish April 2004. During this
implementation, there will be several challenges the staff will encounter,
evervthing from training of Meditech to changes in processes during the
transition phase. We request that you bring your Ministry of Health Card
and your Blue Hospital Card for each visit to the hosptial. We also ask for
patience and understanding from the community during this
implementation as the end result will be more accurate and efficient care
lor the patients in hospital and for all local hospital visits.
