The Citizen, 2003-08-13, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 13, 2003. A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-6236 887-9231 FROM BRUSSELS Ah the golden days of summer - time to relax, read, rejuvenate and really, really enjoy the warm summer days. We did it all - swimming, fishing, hiking, biking and of course, a lot of eating and reading. The provincial park near Alliston is the ideal spot for camping with a wide variety of ages - nice private sites, very clean washrooms, biking and hiking trails, scheduled nature programs, swimming in river or pool and jumping fish ready to be caught - ah, good memories. The summer advertising indicates that it’s time to be thinking about school - pencils, backpacks and shoes tell the story. We’re in the middle of August. Another indicator that it’s August is that it’s TransCan time in Walton. For 12 years now our area prepares for the visitors from Japan, Chile, Belgium, Australia, U.S.A, as well as many other countries with their motorcycles and related equipment. Pro and amateur racers need food, flaggers and facilities and our area people are more than willing to provide. Local groups lend their expertise to the largest motocross event in Canada - the St. John Ambulance excitement of real casualties in real situations - not just pretend. It’s an excellent experience for all. So go to Walton on any of the next four days and be entertained -i music, helicopter rides, food, fun and of course the races. This is Kid’s Comer week, you’ll see the gang at the Mennonite Church every afternoon ready for Vacation Bible School. Each year the theme involves letting our children know of the many in the world who are in need or trouble and relates these to stories in the Bible. For practical application the junior At the Branch People see pipers Volunteers have been there since that first year and have since invited neighbouring brigades to join the youth on Thursday, as in tomorrow from 1:45 to 3 p.m. will be collecting non-perishable items for the North Huron Food bank. We can only collect on the north side of the river so please leave your donation visible and we’ll get it. If you live in the south half of the village give it to one of the children to bring or just leave it at the church after lunch and we’ll see that it gets where it’s needed. Encourage your little school-age friends to attend. Enjoy the weather. Bye now, Betty G.W. By Jo-Ann McDonald The new Brussels Legion senior chairpersons Charlie and Grace Procter are doing their part to promote activity for seniors around the Branch. They took Neil and Ruth Schade, Eleanor Stevenson and Maxine Adams on a trip to Goderich to a Friday night summer ritual for various bagpipers to gather for the Piping Down of the Sun. It is held at St. Christopher’s Beach and begins at dusk. A dozen or so pipers and drummers play for about an hour. The Saturday euchre saw 13 tables of players. The top cash prize went to Ivan Bennewies and partner Ken Engel with 76 points. Tying for second place were Jim Coultes and George Inglis and Thelma Deveau and Doris McClinchey with 75 points. Not having much luck with the cards were Marjorie Smith and Vera Ahrens with only 41 points for low prize. The lone hand winners were Hilda Holmes and Carman Pollock. There were over 100 at the singles dance to enjoy the music of Country Motion. The Friday night supper of beef stew was enjoyed by over 30. This week is sweet and sour meatballs. Attendance in the Branch has been very low during these summer weeks and Comrades are encouraged to make an effort to stop in. Notice of an upcoming meeting concerning Branch chairmen has been received as well for the fall. Mitchell Legion Branch has invited the fish fry crew back for another fry in October.
