Oslo string quartet plays at Stratford People visit Sympathy is extended to the family of Eleanor Hemingway. She grew up in the Cranbrook community the only girl with seven Knight brothers. Leslie and Yvonne Knight spent time last week visiting Rick and his family in Richmond Hill. They also went to Lakefield to visit Ada, Barry and Faith Bellamy, Maureen and Larry Dugan. Brad and Steve Knight hosted a family picnic at Steve’s farm on Sunday for Jack and Donna’s siblings and their families, Joanne Weldon. Andrew and Allison Black who are visiting in the area from New Brunswick. Frank and Kathy Workman enjoyed a few days holidaying at the Pinery near Grand Bend. There will be a card party in Cranbrook on Aug. 15. With generous support from the government of Norway, Stratford Summer Music welcomes the Oslo String Quartet. Norway’s celebrated ensemble will make its Canadian debut with four morning concerts based on the music of its most famous composer, Edvard Grieg on July 31, Aug. 1, 2 and 3 at 9:30 a.m. at the Stratford City Hall Auditorium. Glenn Gould proclaimed Grieg to be his own distant relative and these concerts mark the first time the relationship between the two of the world’s finest musicians has ever been recognized. The Quartet will perform with two young Canadian talents: Stratford soprano Catherine Green (who will sing six of the famous Grieg love songs, three each in English and Norwegian, one of her own ancestral languages, in new arrangements for voice and string quartet on Sunday, Aug. 3) and Newfoundland pianist David Maggs (who will perform a Scandinavian Classic cars at Falls Reserve The 12th annual Car, Motorcycle and Craft Show will be held this weekend at Falls Reserve Conservation Area. Hosted by the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority and the Radar Circle Region of the Historical Automobile Society of Canada, the show will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 3. This year’s event will feature classic cars, vintage motorcycles, an exhibit of high quality crafts and a variety of children’s activities. Falls Reserve Conservation Area is located off County Rd. 31 at Benmiller, just 10 minutes from Goderich. Advanced registration for the piano quintet with the Norwegian musicians on Aug. 2). Quartet members are Geir Inge Lotsberg, violin, Per Kristian Skalstad, violin, Are Sandbakken, viola, and 0ystein Sonstad, cello. Since it was founded in 1991, the Oslo String Quartet has established itself as one of the leading chamber music ensembles in Scandinavia. The Quartet has achieved international acclaim through its concert tours and recordings. The Quartet has begun experimenting in new directions with its expression and choice of repertoire. Sonstad is an accomplished arranger, and has orchestrated a number of popular tunes to suit the ensemble. The Quartet enjoys presenting this lighter repertoire in informal venues, or together with its classical repertoire. The Oslo String Quartet has travelled extensively abroad including performances at the Delft Chamber Music Festival, show has been brisk. All exhibitors receive a commemorative dash plaque for participating. The show provides families with a terrific weekend adventure close to home. Spectators will have an opportunity to vote for their favourite car or motorcycle as part of the annual People’s Choice Prize. Children are invited to participate in special programs being offered throughout the day. Entry into the park is the regular day use fee of $8 per vehicle and admission to the show is free. In addition, the Quartet has performed in Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and Germany. Graduation Joshua Gropp, son of Mark and Bonnie, Brussels, graduated on the Dean's Honour list from Humber College's Introduction to Commercial Jazz/Guitar.
