JESSIE JEAN ELEANOR
HEMINGWAY
Jessie Jean Eleanor (Knight)
Hemingway of RR3, Brussels,
passed away at Seaforth Community
Hospital on Wednesday, July 23,
2003. She was in her 92nd year.
Eleanor was bom in Grey Twp. on
Nov. 11, 1911. The only daughter
and the youngest child to James
Knight and Christena McNeil she
grew up with her seven brothers
Russell, Gordon, Alfred, Walter,
James (Elmer), Hector, and
Goldwyn on the farm east of
Cranbrook, on the 12th Concession
of Grey (Cranbrook Line).
Eleanor attended Listowel High
School and Stratford Normal School
and taught in several schools
including Walton and Glen Allen.
Eleanor and Carl were married in
July of 1935 and lived in Brussels,
Palmerston and Woodstock in the
years from 1936 to 1941. They
moved to the farm on Lot 6, Cone.
12, Grey in 1940 and Eleanor lived
there for over the next 60 years until
February of this year when she
moved to Maplewood Manor in
Seaforth.
Eleanor enjoyed and supported the
activities of her eight children, their
spouses, her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. She spent many
hours tending her vegetable and
flower gardens. Her giant pumpkins
were a great source of pride to her,
while her Peace Roses were a great
source of joy.
Her community involvement
included the Women’s Institute,
Brussels Horticultural Society and
Brussels United Church Women.
Eleanor enjoyed travelling, walking,
lawn bowling, swimming, and
playing cards. The fellowship she
felt when she attended Brussels
Mennonite Fellowship, Seniors’
Group and Diners’ Club in Brussels
was very supportive to her in later
years.
Eleanor’s skills of recitation,
sewing, knitting and breadmaking
will be cherished memories of her
many family members and friends.
Her appreciation of the past and her
gift to the future is shown in her
work with the Grey Twp. Reunion in
collecting memorabilia of Grey
SS#1 and making a booklet of
pictures of the former SS#1 students,
the Huron County Historical Society
and her family’s genealogy.
Eleanor was the beloved wife of
the late Joseph Carl Hemingway and
will be sadly missed by her children
Ruth Axtmann and her husband Jim
of Winthrop, Don Hemingway and
his wife Bernice of Souris,
Manitoba, Marion Godkin and her
husband Lavem of Walton, David
Hemingway and his wife Patricia of
Bayfield, Ross Hemingway and his
wife Anne of RR3, Brussels, Laurel
East and her husband Wallace of
Wawa, Ray Hemingway and his wife
Elaine of Surrey, B.C. and Karen
Phillips of Dorchester. She was also
loved by her 29 grandchildren and
29 great-grandchildren.
Eleanor was predeceased by her
seven brothers.
Friends were received by the
family from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m.
Friday at the Schimanski Family
Funeral Home, Brussels. A Majestic
Women’s Institute service was held
at the funeral home Friday evening.
The funeral service was conducted
from Brussels United Church on
Saturday, July 26 at 2 p.m. with Mrs.
Joan Golden and Pastor Brent Kipfer
officiating.
As a tribute, Eleanor’s
granddaughter Darlene performed
solos of How Great Thou Art and In
the Garden.
Carrying floral tributes were Kathi
Lavoie, Dianne Godkin, Chantelina
Phillips, Brianne Hemingway and
Linda Bogle. Pallbearers were
Darren Hemingway, Bruce Godkin,
Kevin East, Brian Hemingway, Bob
Axtmann and Jeffrey Hemingway.
Interment was in Cranbrook
Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy,
memorial donations may be made to
Brussels United Church, Brussels
Mennonite Fellowship, the Canadian
Cancer society or to the charity of
one’s choice.
SANDRA GRACE McLACHLAN
Sandra (McNichol) McLachlan of
Vanastra passed away on
Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at
Seaforth Community Hospital. She
was in her 52nd year.
She was the beloved wife of Glen.
Sandra was the dear mother of John
and Stephanie McLachlan,
Harpurhey, Joan and Brad Mount,
Brucefield, Jennifer and Stephen
Ducharme, Lucan, Lori and Eric
Kennedy, Robbie McLachlan and
Katie McLachlan, all of Vanastra.
She was the loving grandmother of
Stacy, Bobby, Cordell, Cassandra
and Ethan and loved daughter of
Grace McNichol, RR2, Blyth. She
was the dear daughter-in-law of
Robert and Muriel McLachlan, RR3,
Kippen and beloved sister and sister-
in-law of Murray and Colleen
McNichol, Ray and Kathy
McNichol, Ron and Michelle
McNichol, Debbie and Ron Root,
June Blaine and Don Barwick, Jack
and Mary Helen McLachlan, Lois
and Ray Scoins, Carol Humphries
and Gus Feeney and Don
McLachlan.
She was predeceased by a
daughter Cheryl Lynn, a
granddaughter Alicia McLachlan,
her father Aubrey McNichol and an
infant sister-in-law Joan McLachlan.
Family received friends at the
Whitney-Ribey Funeral Home,
Seaforth on Friday from 2 - 4 and 7
- 9 p.m. The funeral service was held
at Egmondville United Church on
Saturday, July 26 at 11 a.m. Mr.
Stephen Hildebrand officiated.
Pallbearers were Murray
McNichol, Raymond McNichol,
Ronald McNichol, Ron Root, Jack
McLachlan and Dave Dunsmore.
Flowerbearers were Stacy
McLachlan and Amy Root.
Eulogies were given by Glen
McLachlan, Stacy McLachlan, Jack
McLachlan and Ron Root. Soloists
were Betty Baxter and Peter
Simpson, accompanied by Leanne
Overholt. Organist was Mary Helen
McLachlan.
Interment was at Maitlandbank
Cemetery, Seaforth.
Memorial donations to Seaforth
Community Hospital Foundation
(for air mattresses) or Egmondville
United Church would be appreciated
as expressions of sympathy.

GLADYS LOTT
Gladys Lott, the former Gladys
Davidson passed away peacefully at
her residence in Ottawa, Sunday,
July 13, 2003. She was 80.
Bom and raised in Brussels she
was the daughter of the late Robert
and Gertrude Davidson.
She was the loving mother of
David, Joseph and Jim (Sharon). She
was the grandmother of Michael and
D’arcy. Mrs. Lott was the dear sister
of Jean Robinson of Bloomfield
Hills, Michigan.
She was predeceased by her
sisters Ethel Jackson and Agnes
Glassier and brothers George,
Charles, Harvey and Scott.
The funeral service was held at 11
a.m. Wednesday, July 16 in the
chapel at the Kelly Funeral Home in
Ottawa.
Interment was in Pinecrest
Cemetery.
