The Citizen, 2003-07-30, Page 19THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 30, 2003. PAGE 19. Londesborough family hosts exchange student being away from home.” Trevethen misses the general gossip from back home and “knowing what’s going on.” “I wish I could have pocket-size versions of my friends and family,” she said. Trevethen has seen a lot of Ontario during her stay with the MacGregors and more day trips are planned. She’s picnicked in Stratford, shopped in London, had her picture taken with “a random bloke” in Niagara Falls, visited the CN Tower, walked in the parade in Kincardine, and hiked on the Bruce Trail. Trevethen is the 16th student the MacGregors have invited into their family and home but their first from England. They began hosting in 1991 because they “thought it would be neat for the kids to learn about countries and not have to travel there.” Even though the youth come from countries with differing opinions and ways of life, Kittie is quick to say that politics don’t come in the way of friendship. “Nothing political comes between these kids, they’re all human and when it comes down to it, they all want the same thing.” Trevethen agrees v. ith Kittie but says there is “an overall dislike for Blair and Bush.” Kittie says they don’t plan many activities before the person arrives because, “until you meet them face to face you don’t know what they’re like and what they like.” The internet has been a tremendous advantage to all participants in the youth exchange. They have already traded e-mail addresses and are planning to get together after they go back home to Europe. It was especially helpful for Liz, the MacGregors’ daughter, to communicate with Grace beforehand so she had an idea of what she enjoys doing. “It was nice when she got here because I already knew what she likes to do and doesn’t like to do.” Trevethen has found it easy to get along not only with Liz but with Liz’s friends as well. Trevethen even helped them with the CHSS yearbook by sorting and organizing surveys. “You just bring them into your home and treat them like family,” explained Kittie. When asked whether or not they would be taking Trevethen back to the airport Kittie smiles. “When they’ve been with you for that long, you don’t want anybody * else to take them back.” Friends without borders Liz MacGregor, left, and Grace Trevethan, right, became quick friends with help from the Lion’s Club Youth Exchange. Trevethan is staying with Kittie and Don MacGregor of the Londesborough area as part of the exchange until Aug. 4. (Sarah Mann photo) By Sarah Mann Citizen staff Being a good citizen took 18-year old Grace Trevethen a long way - all the way from England to Canada. Hailing from the southwestern city of Truro, in the county of Cornwall, Trevethen was nominated and won the southwestern England good citizen award. After winning the award, Trevethen was told she would be taking part in an exchange and got the choice of where she wanted to go- She chose Canada. “I have family who live here and my grandparents have come here and loved it.” Arriving in Canada on June 24, Trevethen stayed with family until she went to stay with Don and Kittie MacGregor, of the Londesborough area, on July 2. While it might not seem like a stretch to come from England to Canada, there are differences in the two countries. “Here everything is on a larger scale, like farms,” Trevethen said. “The roads here are straight, very straight, and the weather is a lot warmer than at home.” “It’s even warm here when it’s raining,” she says laughing. Also, self-rising flour isn’t used, peanut butter and jam is not a popular sandwich filler and, “our [England’s] cereal is actually good for you. . . it’s not lumps of sugar.” While there are differences, there are similarities as well. ' “Back home we have the same sense of community spirit, maybe even more so here, but there is the same sense of community.” What Trevethen likes the most about this exchange is, “being with different people and being in a different place and seeing how people do things.” She explains that it’s that kind of curiosity that prompted her to attend university in London for anthropology and sociology. This trip, she says, will help her prepare for going to school in London this September. “Because I’m going to school in London, this will help me get used to A-C-W gets grant for system upgrades With the assistance of federal and provincial grant money, the residents of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Twp. will have cleaner and safer water. Huron-Bruce MP Paul Steckle and Huron-Bruce MPP Helen Johns presented reeve Ben Van Diepenbeek with a cheque for $255,692 recently to help cover the costs of the $383,538 upgrading project for the Huron Sands, Saltford and Benmiller Inn well systems. Sixty-nine homes will be affec ted. As well as improving the water quality. Van Diepenbeek said the funds will make clean drinking water more affordable for residents as they will drop the price for access to the wells to an estimated $3,500 from about $10,000. At Huron Sands, existing wells will be abandoned and a new well and pumphouse constructed with the required equipment, analyzers and controls. A transmission main will be constructed at Saltford, connecting the the water system to the Century Heights supply. A chlorination system and chemical spill containment backflow preventers will be installed at the Benmiller Inn site. The reservoir will be inspected and repaired to prevent contamination and to secure access. CKNX Barn Dance RV/CAMPERS JAMBOREE Weekend. Blyth, May 23-25. Music & Friendship. Serviced lots.
