A touch of sadness for the Walton
are with the passing of two area
people. An amazing woman, Eleanor
Hemingway passed away last week.
Our condolences to her many family
members including Marion and
Lavern Godkin, Ruth and Jim
Axtmann and Ross and Anne
Hemingway.
Our condolences also go to the
family and friends of Larry Nevers,

created an informal setting where youngsters and
inexperienced golfers can come and practise. (Bonnie Gropp

Course great place for starters

.The 13 acres at the Cranbrook
home of Dave and Karen Smith was
a great place for Dave to indulge his
love of golf.
For several years he used the land
as a driving range, but four years
ago, a vision began to take shape.
He began moving trees to make
fairways and things took on a life of
their own.
Work is nearly complete on
River’s Edge, a nine-hole, par three
golfcourse. Smith stresses his
intention has not been to compete
with the bigger courses in the
area.
"1 want this to be a place for local
kids to learn the game or for
inexperienced golfers to come and
practise.”
The area is fed by an artesian well
and has four ponds, including one
especially to his wife Marsha.
Wedding celebrations were
enjoyed by two area families this
past weekend.
Mary Humphries travelled to
London to attend the wedding of
grandson Jim Humphries to
Kimberly Ann Brown. Jim is the son
of Bob and Nora Humphries. They
were married at Trinity United
Church and had pictures taken at the
bride’s parents’ home following the
service.
Other family members in the
wedding party included sister Kathy
Ryan and children Shane and Holly.
Her husband Mike Ryan and son
Mitchell were also there.
Also attending were Mary’s
daughters Kim with husband Gene
and boys Andrew, Bryce and Wenda
with son Paul.
stocked with trout. Work has also
begun on a clubhouse.
Smith has purchased eight golf
carts, but players must bring their
own clubs, balls, etc. There are cards
available to guide people along the
course. Admission for now is by
donation.
“Karen and I both work full-time.
I’m not running a business here, but
I would like to break even.”
A local farmer helps him maintain
the grounds.
Several informal tournaments
have been played this summer and
Smith is taking bookings already for
family reunions and company parties
for 2004.
He encourages anyone interested
to drop by and hit the links. Anyone
with inquiries can call him at 887-
6000.
River’s Edge is located east of
Brussels, north of Cranbrook on
McNabb Line.
Bill and Marjorie Humphries and
members of their families attended
as well. Mary stayed over and on
Sunday attended a brunch at the
bride’s home when the new couple
opened their gifts. Congrats to them.
The McClure family celebrated
the wedding nuptials of Sandra
(Sandy) McClure and David
Wascher. Sandy is the daughter of
Bill and Sharon McClure.
The lovely small wedding was
held at the Four Points hotel in
London. Sister Connie Alcock was
matron of honour and brother Mark
an usher. The three nieces Kim, Amy
and Kayla were flowergirls. Also
attending were many of the aunts
and uncles from the Walton area.
Bruno Braecker hosted a
wonderful party for his wife Joyce’s
65th birthday. Many family and
friends and even old neighbours
enjoyed a great evening together.
Happy birthday Joyce!
Jack and Donna Knight have
company, if family is considered
company. Daughter Joanne and
Weldon, Andrew and Allison are
here visiting for a couple of weeks.
They live near St. John, New
Brunswick.
While here they attended the
Knight and Gloor family reunion
hosted by Steve Knight and Marni.
There were over 50 who attended
the barbecue and potluck supper.
Visiting and games kept them busy.
This was also a time to celebrate a
belated 45th wedding anniversary
for Jack and Donna.
Guests attended from near and far
including Chatham, Windsor,
Toronto, Kitchener, Mitchell and
New Brunswick.
Returning from a motorcycle trip
to the west coast were Don and Pat
Nolan. They were away four weeks
and enjoyed camping their way
across Canada. They took the
northern route through Ontario to
Kenora and onto the Prairies.
An interesting look at the past and
present was at Indian Head,
Saskatchewan where an old grain
elevator stands beside the modem
elevator.
They passed through Alberta and
took the scenic tour of the Kootenees
and didn’t travel the Trans Canada
Highway. At Hope B.C. they found
the beautiful tree carvings by Peter
Ryan.
At Hell’s Gate, Don took the train
down into the canyon and was
amazed at the steepness and beauty
of it. Travelling on the ferry to
Vancouver Island, they took in
Buchart Gardens before biking to the
end of the island.

They boarded a ferry and took a
13-hour boat ride through the Inside
Passage where they saw whales and
porpoises. Pat saw a deer swimming
through the channel to the next
island.
They landed at Prince Rupert and
went on to Terrace, B.C.
In Cranbrook they saw a glass
house. It was built by a former
mortician out of embalming bottles
