U-13 Thunder take B title
Through determination and the
spirit to play each time that they
took to the field, the Blyth U-13
soccer squad captured the B
championship title at the year-end
tournament in Lucknow on the
weekend.
The team allowed only one goal
throughout the entire event, though
that single netter put them on the B
side of play.
Blyth met Lucknow Optimists
July 23 to begin the playoffs.
Though Regal Good saw only one
shot slip by him, the opponents took
the first game by a 1-0 score.
Moving to the consolation side,
Blyth took on the Clinton Crushers
July 25.
“They dominated the entire game,
said coach Alan Young. “They
played up to their potential.”
Scoring for Blyth in the 5-0
shutout were Laura Salverda,
Gordon Brigham, Ben Caldwell
(two) and Brett Courtney.
The defence played a strong
game on the morning of July 26,
keeping Wingham Dark Green off
the board while Brigham and
Johnathan McDowell tallied two for
Blyth.
Young said the squad stuck to their
style of play, playing tight up the
middle while keeping the ball to the
outside.
In the consolation final, Blyth met
Goderich Tim Hortons, taking their
game to the field and dominating all
positions on the field throughout the
contest.
Good tallied another shutout
while Courtney netted two for the
victory.
The team of Caldwell, Brigham,
McDowell, Courtney, Salverda,
Good, Drew Taylor, Derek
Youngblut, Jesse Mullins, Mathew
Boven, Darren Potter, Jared
Bjorkman, Jennifer Williamson,
Shaina Carter, Natasha Hubbard,
Alisha Dole and Darcy Young pulled
together for a very successful
season.

DeBlock assisting.
The play picked up in the second

Minto scored one last time to make
the game even at the end of the
