The Huron Country Playhouse
third offering of the season is the
Rodgers and Hammerstein classic,
Carousel, which will run until Aug.
2.
The story unfolds in a small New
England fishing village, between
1873 and 1888. Billy Bigelow, a
travelling carnival barker, falls in
love with Julie Jordan, an innocent
mill worker. This greatly upsets the
carousel owner, Mrs. Mullin, who
harbours a crush on Billy and
promptly responds to his newfound
happiness by firing him.
Things quickly go sour for the
lovebirds, as they are forced to live
on the charity of their cousin, Nettie
Fowler. When Billy finds out he is
going to become a father, he decides
to take a gamble and make a better
life for his family by robbing David
Bascombe, the local mill owner.
However, the plan goes
disastrously awry, setting in motion
an unexpected chain of events that
dramatically changes the lives of
everyone around him. It is not until
many years later that Billy is given
one final chance to make amends for
his actions and demonstrates the true
power of love and redemption to his
co-op

Sunday afternoons.
