Doctor says get children outside and moving this summer
By Dr. Dana Hanson
Do your children a favour, get
them outside! It’s summertime, and
fitness is at your doorstep. The trick
is to persuade your child to cross
that threshold - away from the lure
of the TV and computer - toward a
healthier body.
We’ve all read the alarming
statistics about childhood obesity —
nearly a quarter of Canadian
children are carrying excess weight.
They’re also carrying an increased
risk of type II diabetes, high blood
pressure and other serious health
problems.
But rather than dwell on the
negative, sports medicine expert Dr.
Bill Mackie encourages a positive -
and fun - move toward better
health: increased activity.
“The key is to ask your children
what they like to do outside, or just
watch them. This sounds incredibly
simplistic, but it gives you a starting
point,” says Mackie, a father of six.
That information can help you find
an activity that suits your child.
However, don’t start with too
much, Mackie cautions, because that
can turn kids off. But even an hour a
day can make all the difference.
Health Canada’s Physical Activity
Guide for Children, co-sponsored by
the Canadian Paediatric Society
(www.cps.ca), gives you lots of
ideas (call 1 888 334-9769 or go to
www.healthcanada.ca/paguide).
“It’s one of the best guides there
is,” says Mackie, a member of the
Canadian Medical Association’s
Council on Health Care and
Promotion.
He also offers these three steps
toward increased fitness
1. Go outside
Simply going outdoors leads to
children being more active reports
the Canadian Life and Fitness
Institute. Encourage your children to
go into the backyard or your
neighbourhood park.
2. Be an active example
Children copy their parents, so set
a good example by doing things
together. Try walking trails, a family
bike ride or tossing a ball or frisbee.
Leave the car at home and walk to
the store or a friend’s house. Not
only will you get to spend some
quality family time together, you’ll
also get some exercise yourself.
3. Get your children involved
Structured sports and activities are
fun and have benefits beyond
physical fitness, including increased
self-esteem and confidence. There
are so many options, from
swimming lessons for babies to
kindergym, dance lessons to
competitive sports.
Don’t be discouraged if your child
isn’t keen. Mackie uses bribery. In
exchange for going to the first lesson
or practice, promise them a game of
Monopoly or some other activity
they like doing with you (but don’t
promise a high-calorie treat).
“After the first session they meet
people and then they’re keen,” says
Mackie, whose daughter recently
placed first in a national gymnastics
competition.
Let older children select a sports
camp or take lessons in tennis or
swimming. Many municipalities
offer inexpensive programs.
Fitness is one part of the equation;
a healthy diet is the other. Mackie’s
simple formula is: eat breakfast,
have five servings of fruit and
veggies every day and avoid junk
food. See Canada’s Food Guide for
more information (www.hc-sc.gc.ca
and select “healthy living.”)
But fitness is vital. People who are
active are healthier. Most
importantly, it can lead to a lifetime
of activity - and better health.
