Winners were: share-the-wealth, Helen Cullen, Dorothy Martin; high Brussels Livestock sponsors tourney The Brussels Livestock Sales yard sponsored a men’s pairs lawn bowling tournament at the Brussels greens, Thursday, July 10 with 12 teams competing. There were a few showers but the intrepid bowlers never hesitated. Winners were: first, Wayne Wright and Chuck Townsend. Chesley, three wins, 43; second, Harry Jacobi and Bob Thompson, Exeter Club, two wins, 49; third, Dennis Schmidt and Jurgan Fessler, Goderich, two wins, 47; fourth, Murray Taylor and John Hunter, Orangeville, two wins, 43; J. Good earns shutout The Thunder and Lightning was no match for the downpour of rain that fell on the Mosquito players on Thursday, June 26. Blyth Thunder and Blyth Lightning met at the Sparling field for week eight of the soccer schedule. Blyth Thunder received a goal in the first half of play, when the rain came, forcing the game to be called off. Within seconds it was too difficult to distinguish who was the opposing team. There will be no rematch for this game. On July 15, the Blyth Lightning’s goalie, Jordan Good, made several saves, thus receiving a shutout against the Clinton Crushers at Fullarton topples Midget Girls The Brussels Midget girls played against Fullarton on Sunday, July 13. Lisa Black started on the mound with four strikeouts. Candice Ross would come in to relieve. Fullarton started off the game with single runs scoring in both the first and second innings. They were shut down in the third scoring no runs. Brussels would have a chance in the second to score a run, but left the bases loaded. Ross, in the third, hit a single and advanced on errors to score. Fullarton came to bat in the fourth scoring seven runs on six hits and three errors. Brussels in the fourth had Sara McDonald wait out a walk and score on a double by Black. Catrina Josling’s single would advance runners. Black stole home to bring the Brussels score to three. Playing under better weather conditions than the previous week, the Mosquitoes rallied behind the Lightning’s netkeeper. Blyth got the only goal in the first half. Tony Bean passed the ball to Jory-Lynn Uyl, who kicked the ball into the comer of the net. Halfway through the second half Tyson Sjaarda scored after Anthony Peters passed him the ball, making the score 2-0 for Blyth. Clinton had an opportunity to score on a penalty shot, but the ball went high, with the help of Blyth’s fullback, Blaine Hallahan. Outrunning the opposing defence, Rachel Speers led off with a single. Cyndi Stevenson reached first on an error. Ross slammed a double to score two runs. Matthew Terpstra and Lexandrea Smith played really well with Smith scoring the only goal. Also showing their goalie skills that night were Jessica Johnston, Curtis Terpstra, and Gregory Ward. The next euchre will be held on Monday, July 21 at 8:30 p.m. PEOPLE AROUND BELGRAVE By Linda Campbell Call 357-2188 Belgrave held its annual memorial service at Brandon Cemetery on Sunday, July 6. Rev. Ethel Miner Clare led the service. John McIntosh was the guest soloist. About 80 people attended on a very hot afternoon. Uyl scored unassisted, minutes before the end of the game making the final score, 3-0 for the Light­ ning. Thursday, July 10, the Blyth Lightning played Goderich KFC at the Sparling field in Blyth. Twenty minutes into the game, Goderich scored on a penalty shot, making the score 1-0. This was to be the final score, despite the efforts of the Blyth players. Blyth had many chances, but was denied. The final game of the scheduled season will be against the Seaforth Centurions at the Seaforth high school, Thursday, July 17. hit by Heather Little. The final score was Fullarton, 14, Brussels, 6. The next home game is July 27 at 8 p.m. 6 III team. Ward played excellent in net making several big saves when the U-6 Ills played the U-6 Is on July 2. L. Smith scored two goals in the second half of the game and, despite the score, Riley Holthuysen was great in net. Without several saves it would have been a much higher score. The final score of the game was 6 - 1 for team I. Way to go Bradley Haines, son of John and Ruth Haines of the Belgrave area, won first place in the mid-Western Ontario District Junior Golf Championships held in St. Marys recently. Now Haines moves on to a tournament in Ingersoll from Aug. 11-14 and qualifies for a 2004 tournament in Florida. (Sarah Mann photo) Stewart qualifies for golf Nationals Kirk Stewart competed in the Ontario Optimist golf tournament Tuesday, July 8 in St. Marys. Stewart shot a three over par 75 to tie for fifth place and qualified for the Canadian Optimist Junior Golf National Championships. The championships will be held Aug. 11 to 13 at Ingersoll. Stewart travelled to Tillsonburg on Wednesday and shot an even par 70 giving him a second- place finish, two strokes behind the leader. Events this week take Stewart to Sunningdale, London on Monday and to St. Thomas on Thursday.
