Should’ve swung
The darkening sky didn’t dampen the spirits of ball players
at the Belgrave ball tournament. A strike was called as this
slo-pitch player looks to realize she should have swung at
the ball instead. This match between the Higgins Team
(from the Belgrave area) and The Waltons ended in a 6-3

The last week of regular season
for the North Perth Midget Outlaws
proved to be interesting.
On Monday night, July 7 the rival
Brantford team came to Listowel.
Matt Tell, assisted by David
Fitzgerald put the dark one past the
Brantford goalie early in the first
period to start the scoring. The play
was back and forth for almost 10
minutes before the opposing team
was able to score. Tyler DeVos
answered quickly with an unassisted
goal. Brantford evened it up on a
powerplay but Tony DeBlock got the
go-ahead goal to end the first period
with less than a minute left in the
period.
The second period went well for
the Outlaws with Fitzgerald adding
one of his own on a pass from Brett
Hunt. Justin Erb got in on the action
Brussels U-lls lose close one
With just one win and a tie under
their belts this season, the Brussels
U-ll team put on a good showing
when they met Newton II, July 8.
Though the visitors scored early,
Randy Zwep’s strong kicking power
soon put Brussels back in the game.
First, a boot from centre moved the
play down field to slow the attack.
Then, following a great stop by
Christine Bone in net and help from
defenders Adrian Menzi and
Matthew Cardiff, Zwep picked up
the ball from a comer kick, carried it
downfield where the combined
efforts of Vicky Blake and Natalie
White tied the game at one.
Kristen Grobbink was active in
centrefield, continually rushing into

by adding another point on a pass
from Justin Smith. Jason Hamilton,
with help from Fitzgerald scored late
in the second period.
The Brantford team was only
allowed one goal in the second.
Tempers rose and fists flew and
much of the rest of the game was
played with only three Outlaw
players on the floor at a time. Liam
Madge was faced with the difficult
task of trying to keep the ball out of
the net with so many attackers
coming at him.
Brantford scored 10 goals in the
third period to the one lone marker
scored early in the period by
Hamilton.
The second game in as many days
was played on Tuesday night. A
much different team came out to
play. The Outlaws met up with the
the fray. Cassidy Peachey cleared
the ball from the opponents. Jason
Warwick narrowly missed putting
Brussels ahead when his shot went
wide.
Zwep attempted to set up Emily
Prior and Avaleigh Nonkes in front
of the Newton net, but their efforts
were pushed aside.
Newton regained the lead before
halftime when two players
confronted Bone with a shot that
went just wide of her sprawling
attempt at kicking it clear. She
followed that up with a tremendous
grab as the ball rolled towards the
comer of the net.
After seeing Newton open a two-
goal lead early in the second, a great
played in Brussels and lost 11-6.
It was a big-scoring night on June
16 when Blyth played Belmore and
won 26-7.
