Program gets home Organizers of Huron County’s Good Food Box program will soon have a permanent home in one of the buildings created from the original Huronview at Clinton. The program, which assembles and sells boxes of nutritious food, as often as possible from local farms and businesses, will rent the former auditorium in the county’s Jacob Memorial Building, a large room that will allow more efficient packing. The program has created up to 300 boxes a month using volunteer help. The rent will be $100 a month. If demand grows for the service up to 25 homes could be included under a licence provided to the county by the province, John MacKinnon, social services administrator told county council, July 3. Lin Steffler, Huron East councillor, worried about increasing the number of day-care spaces in the county when many of the six full- time day-care centres are in deficit positions. But MacKinnon pointed out that his department will choose homes in parts of the county that are currently underserviced. Current day- care centres may be too far from where people live and work to be useful, he said. As well, even in towns with day care centres, there’s the problem of looking after infants from birth to 18 months, the age at which most facilities will accept children. Statistics show two-thirds of children in Huron are looked after in private homes, he said. County inspectors will make sure a home has the proper facilities before licencing an in-home day-care. Under this program those using licenced home day cares will be eligible for subsidies just like those available for people sending their children to day-care centres.
