The Citizen, 2003-07-09, Page 12PAGE 12. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 9, 2003. Cookbook raises funds for African women Think globally, act locally. Half of the proceeds from a new Huron County recipe book and an original-design queen-sized quilt will help women in Africa living with AIDS and HIV and Women Today of Huron, who are spearheading the fundraising. Women Today of Huron executive director Pam Hanington said the idea for the fundraiser came from a discussion last year after Stephen Lewis, United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, spoke at a Women’s Shelter, Second Stage Housing and Counselling Services of Huron County fundraiser. Lewis spoke about the plight of women trying to survive with HIV and AIDS in Africa. “It made me realize, when we think about rural women there is a whole world of rural women. If we are going to work on rural women, why stop at Huron County?” Hanington said. “The dollars will go further there than they will here and will show our support for other rural women.” The recipe book What’s Cookin’ in Huron County features recipes submitted from Huron County and each recipe features produce grown in the county. Goderich artist Linda Wiebe, who also designs the Celtic Festival logo, provided art for the cover and several photographers submitted photos for each season. The Goderich Quilter’s Guiid completely designed and crafted the queen-sized quilt entitled Women at Work, based on the theme provided by Women Today. The quilt featuring women’s traditional work has several women doing a variety of work including graduating, quilting, sewing and carrying a briefcase. The quilt also features a quilted replica of the Huron County Courthouse. The quilt was donated by the guild in honour of World Rural Women’s Day on Oct. 15. The draw for the quilt will be made on Oct. 17. The recipe book and quilt tickets are available at Women Today of Huron on 67 West St., Goderich. Women Today of Huron is a women’s resource centre with the goals to enhance women’s economic independence and violence prevention. Women Today provides pre-employment training to women, operates the Women’s Business clothing project, facilitates workshops with teenage women and developmentally-disabled women on healthy relationships, and co facilitates volunteer training with the Women’s Shelter, Second Stage Housing and Counselling Services of Huron. 254 Drummond St. E., Blyth Saturday Night Mass at 7:00 pm Father John Johnson, Pastor 357-2435 MELVILLE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH BRUSSELS We witt uioAbhip ulM United ChuAcJi fat tfie mantfi bf fatty Rev.
