HU makes changes for beach testing Some Huron County beaches will have water tests more often, some less under a new protocol adopted by the Huron County Health Unit. The changes follow rcommendations of a study of health unit water testing procedures by Michael Brodsky of Brodsky Consultants. Brodsky generally praised the health unit’s efforts but suggested that some beaches with historically stable readings of low E. coli could be tested only once or twice a month while beaches that show unpredictable spikes of bacteria will be tested more frequently. While beaches in the past have only been posted with warning signs after successive high readings for E. coli, the new protocol will see permanent warnings on beaches with a historically-high bacterial count. Also proposed are tests of sediment on the lake bed because research shows E. coli can live in the sediment for up to a year and be stirred up by wave action. Creeks, rivers and runoffs would be tested to try to identify the sources of pollution.
