The committee, Scharfe said, will ensure a greater look at the county as a whole. “What’s really nice about the committee is that all players are there at the table to make decisions jointly about what is happening.” As well as being at monthly meetings, all members of the committee receive reports when new information comes in to ensure that everyone is one the same level. Scharfe also explained that it is important for people to be educated when it comes to WNV. Eighty per cent of people who get WNV will not know that they have it. But, Scharfe said, if people get flu-like symptoms, which is uncommon in the summer, then they should seek medical attention and receive a blood test. “However, we don’t want people going to get the blood test just because they’re curious. We don’t these events happening. The second half of the film was shown the following week and was even more interesting to me. As of Tuesday morning, all birds tested have came back negative for WNV. “People are calling in about dead birds but they have to be fresh (24 to 48 hours after death) for them to be suitable for testing,” Scharfe said. “But, we still want people to call if there are sightings of crows and ravens because these birds are the most susceptible.” You can tell the crows and ravens apart from other birds because they are totally black, including their beaks and feet. Scharfe says the number one thing to remember is to reduce standing water and take personal protection. She reminds people to stay inside when mosquitoes are known to be out, to wear lightly coloured clothing, and to use insect repel lent. “The most important defence is information, and people who change their behaviours. Within a week, it was gone and I was devastated. We searched everywhere around the cemetery trying to see if it had just been dumped, but the angel wasn’t found. My father meant the world to me and this senseless destruction has left me terribly hurt. More than anything, I would like to have the angel returned to the cemetery. Any help in locating it would be greatly appreciated. Tammy Rose. Everett Hessels of Blyth purchased his first Model A in 1966 and since that time has seen many vehicles pass through his shop. Today, he owns six, in various states of completion, but the most recent winner is a 1931 Victoria after it captured a MARC of Excellence last week. Hessels, wife Cheryl and several friends attended the huge American show where approximately 800 Model As were on display. The Blue Ribbon elimination judging took that number down to 29, said Hessels. It then took teams of judges from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to give the specimens a going over. “There are 23 areas to be judged on a Model A,” he said, “and there are four to six judges for each area.” The Model A Restorers Club (MARC) presents first place awards to vehicles which have earned between 375 and 399 points. fighting with guns, the Danish army is ordered to lay down their arms and allow the invasion to come. Subsequently, the Danes tied up valuable troops, sabotaged industrial production and saved most of Denmark’s Jews from the death camps. The population did this en masse, without a central government organizing their efforts. It was an inspiring moment in the film to watch the old black and white footage, shot in secret from a tall building, as the entire city of Copenhagen, thousands of pedestrians, vehicle traffic, even, it seems, the very dogs and cats on the streets, stopped dead in their tracks at the stroke of the noonday clock in symbolic protest. It makes me wonder if we were ever faced with such a situation here in Canada, would we have the fortitude necessary to face our enemies without tanks and bombs? It was announced afterwards that these films are available at no cost to schools and civic groups. Hessels tallied 410, thereby earning an “excellence” trophy, one of only a handful awarded. “The judges there are very knowledgeable and it is the top show to go to if you are a restorer,” said Hessels. The prize-winning Victoria has been owned by Hessels about six years, having found it in Woodstock. “I was looking for a fancier Model A,” he said. “They were a deluxe model intended to boost sales at the time. They are more comfortable and can go 50 mph. Then, over a three-year period, Hessels completely disassembled the car, down to the “last nut and bolt”, and restored it. The trip to Michigan was the first and last time the Victoria will be judged as the Hessels prefer to drive and enjoy their Model As rather than show them. The Victoria has 3,000 miles on it.
