Students consider options in double co-hort year

received acceptance letters from
both of her first choices and has
decided on attending Conestoga
college for accounting.
She was also accepted to
Fanshawe College, Sheridan
College, Georgian College, Brock
University and the University of
Guelph but not Wilfred Laurier.
Armstrong heard about Conestoga
from “friends and my co-op
supervisor also said it was well
known for the accounting program.”
Armstrong felt her advantage over
other students was the experience
she gained in co-op.
“It was really helpful with
business and interpersonal skills.”
Armstrong maintained an 80 per
cent average, however, said she
“really tried and aimed high but the
average needed to get into Laurier
was 90 per cent. The double cohort
wasn’t really explained to us
because we are in OAC but if it had
have been explained I probably
would have tried to fast track and
graduate in four years.”
In five years, Armstrong hopes to
be done college and attending
university for a degree.
Brittany Kellington, an F.E.
Madill graduate from Brussels, had
her hopes set on one program, law
and security, and applied to five
different colleges: Georgian,
Niagara, Mohawk, Fanshawe, and
Conestoga.
Kellington is also one of the lucky
ones who was accepted to their first
choice school.
“Georgian College is my first
choice because it has the best
programs for police officers with the
academy across [from] the campus.”
Kellington admitted she didn’t
look ahead to the future when she
picked her high school classes and
“wouldn’t have taken all university
courses since I am just going to
college.”
“It’s been hard being in the double
cohort because the teachers didn’t
know what to expect, and the same
goes for us students,” she said.
“Being de-semestered and in the
double cohort was very difficult,
especially since I had to juggle
playing for the high school hockey
team as well as my own team,

Nesbitt said to do this, “yoiPjust

in yourself. I never thought that I
would be able to do something like
a social life.”
Kellington aimed high so she
could “have many schools to choose
from and wanted to see what school
best fits me and my needs.”
Besides receiving an acceptance
letter from Georgian, she also
received letters from Mohawk,
Fanshawe, and Niagara but didn’t
get in to Conestoga because they
were full in her program.
Kellington said a “great
this, but I did.”
Nesbitt is 16 years old and is
entering Grade 11 at F.E. Madill in
the fall.
