Brussels Livestock report
Cattle prices continue sharp drop
Total receipts for Brussels
Livestock for the week ending June
27 were 759 head of cattle, 606
lambs and goats. On Tuesday, the fed
steers and heifers sold sharply lower
from last week’s prices. Cows also
sold on a sharply lower market. On
Thursday, the veal traded on a
sharply lower market. The lambs sold
on a strong .active trade. On Friday all
weights and classes of Stockers sold
at prices steady with last week’s.
There were 177 steers on offer
selling from $55 to $65 with sales to
$86.50. Owen B. Martin, Wellesley,
consigned one blacksteer weighing
1,220 lbs. which sold to Holly Park
Meat Packers for $86.50. His overall
offering of fourteen steers averaged
1,373 lbs. selling for an average price

The Barn Dance Society made some generous contributions in Blyth this past week in
gratitude for the support and co-operation shown in helping to make this spring’s weekend
jamboree campout a success. Donations of $200 each were given to the fire department, the
Lions Club and the Thresher Association. Also $150 was given to to the Scouts and Guides

Huron plowing match, Aug, 15
This year, the annual Huron
County Plowing Match will take
place on Friday, Aug. 15 at the farm
of Bob and Pat Down in Usbome
Twp.
It is one of the few events that
involve the whole county. You will
see men and women plowing with
both walking and sulky (riding)
plows and competition plows. Added
interests are novelty and group
plowing classes.
As well, young plowmen
participate in the county match and
go on to compete for thousands of
dollars in post-secondary education
scholarships. Many of these
scholarships have been awarded to
Owl Prowl at Hullett
The Friends of Hullett are holding
shine activities in the next couple of
weeks, all free.
On July 13, Hullett Marsh
manager David Beamer will be
leading an owl prowl/night hike.
Those interested should meet at the
Hullett office at 9:30 p.m. and plan
to hike for approximately one and a
half hours. They will be playing
some owl calls in hopes for a
sighting.
On July 11 and 18, the Friends of
Hullett will be receiving batches of
600 ringnecked pheasants and need

The Huron County Plowing Match
promotes agriculture and land
conservation. To help promote these
throughout the year, a Queen of the
Furrow Competition is held at the
local match. It is open to young
women between the ages of 16 and
24.
The winner of this year’s Queen of
the Furrow Competition will go on to
compete in next year’s International
Plowing Match, which will be held in
Grey County. The successful young
woman at the IPM will win the use of
a brand new car for one year during
her reign as Ontario Queen of the
Furrow.

a picnic area for people to enjoy.

Match has attended events such as

addressed Huron County council

on Aug. 15, 2003 will be an
Ambassador for Huron County.

farm history
On Sunday, July 6 spend the day
on the farm at Doon Heritage
Crossroads.
In the summer, there is so much
work to be done on the farm. Watch
the blacksmith putting new shoes on
the draft horses, help with the cream
separating, gather the eggs, take a
garden tour, or just sit back, and
enjoy a little bit of country in the
city.
