Sports Local track athletes do well Taking aim It was another loss for the Brussels U-11 squad when they took to the field on a sweltering evening, against Listowel II, June 24. (Janice Becker photo) Thunder ties Seaforth The Blyth Thunder Atoms played their eighth soccer game of the season against Seaforth 2, at the Optimist Park in Seaforth, June 24. Game captain, Emily Nickolson Outlaws play Brantford North Perth Midget Outlaws travelled to play the Brantford lacrosse team last Wednesday. The Outlaws started the scoring when Adam MacDonald received a pass from Tyler De Vos and found a spot to sneak the ball past the massive Brantford goalie. The visiting team was unable to score again until the third period. By that time Brantford had gone ahead by nine goals. Jordan Doig added one on a pass from goalie Liam Madge. DeVos scored on a pass from Jason Hamilton and Xavier O’Krafka’s persistence paid off with an unassisted goal. The final score was 11-4. The next games are on the weekend in the Midland tournament. The next home game is Wednesday, July 2 in Wingham against Elora. Brussels gets shutout Despite the heat, the Brussels U-9 goalies Anthony Lichty and Cameron Stewart kept the ball out of the net on June 23 when they played against Newton. Jesse Rapson scored the only goal in the first half of the game. When Stewart took over goalie duties for Lichty in the second half, Litchty proved he is not only good at keeping the ball out of the net, he scored the second and third goals of the game. On a penalty kick, Rapson scored his second goal of the game and scored again about a minute later on a breakaway. The final score was 5-0 for Brussels. started as left defense. The hosts came on strong, scoring two goals early in the game. ' However the Thunder kept the pressure on and Jesse Pot scored the first goal with an assist from Aislynn Bremner. At the half time, Blyth was down with a score of 3-1 for Seaforth. Brent Drost scored Blyth’s second goal with an assist from Jasmine deBoer. Drost took a swift kick in the kneecap and was carried off the field. Hopes were pinned on Pot who took the penalty kick. He did not let them down and scored a goal to tie up the game. The whole team played with skill and determination and successfully came from behind, said Coach Mary Ann Drost. The final score was a 3- 3 tie. “The defensive and halfback lines performed extremely well during this game. Kurtis Kolkman and Jacob Van Dorp were the star goalkeepers. Graduation On June 13, 2003 Chad Fischer, son of Murray and Marlene Fischer, received his Associate Diploma in Agriculture from the University of Guelph. Congratulations Chad. Several Blyth and area athletes were very successful at the Royal Canadian Legion District C track and field meet, held at Centennial Stadium in Kitchener on June 21. Branch 420 Blyth sponsored several area athletes for this meet. The Blyth Legion looks after the transportation, entry fees and provides lunch money for each athlete attending the District C meet. Competing in the 13 and under boys division, Gordon Brigham received a bronze medal in the 200- metre sprint, and silver in the 800- metre sprint. Also in the same division, Darcy Young received a silver medal for javelin. Setting a new record and getting a .gold medal with a put of 10.19 Midgets play to tie It was a close game when the Brussels Midget girls played at home against Hibbert on June 23. Lisa Black started on the mound for Brussels pitching three strikeouts and allowing only three runs. Brussels scored two runs in the first inning and added two runs in the second and third innings. The Brussels squad entered the bottom of the sixth with their backs against the wall. With the time limit, this would be their last bat and they were down by four runs. Hibbert’s strong defence saw a strikeout and an unassisted play by the first baseman. Pepper kept Brussels in the game with a single to left field and Jenna Fischer then waited out a walk. Anthony Peters received a bronze medal in the 15- and-under boys’ discus. He competed in this age group as discus was not available in the 13-and- under category. Competing in the 15-and-under girls’ triple jump, Brittney Peters earned a trip to the provincial meet with a silver medal jump of 10.25 metres. Jenna Taylor, competing in the 17- and-under girls’ division will also be competing at the provincial meet once again. Taylor placed first in javelin with a throw of 32.78 metres and placed second in shot and discus. She will compete in all three walk and advancing on errors. Two runs were scored when Lacey McCall hit a single, followed by another single from Catrina Josling. Ashley Keffer tried to keep hopes alive but flied out to second. Other Blyth-area athletes attending the July 18 and 19 provincial meet in London are Meagan Campbell and Kerissa Van Amersfoort representing the Madill high school team. All the girls are past graduates of Blyth Public School and have attended the District C meet on behalf of Branch 420 Blyth of the Royal Canadian Legion. U-6 Ills play U-6 IVs The Brussels U-6 Ills squared off against the U-6 IVs on June 25 with everyone playing extremely hard and having lots of fun. Great team work was displayed as Wyatt Machan, Delayna Smith, Jasmine Vader, Lexandrea Smith, and Curtis Terpstra were passing the ball very well.
