The Citizen, 2003-06-25, Page 41PAGE 16. BLYTH FESTIVAL SALUTE, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 25, 2003. Young Company will work with top professionals out for each other. They often maintain those relationships throughout the year and they are all from different schools.” It is an enriching experience for all involved, he said. “If one is artistically inclined, it can be difficult is there is no access to the arts.” However, working on Washer of the Ford will not only be an enriching social and artistic endeavour, but a time of hard work and commitment. The young people work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., five days a week foi five to six weeks, said Garratt. “It is a big commitment.” Young Company’s production of Washer of the Ford and Other Celtic Tales runs from Aug. 18-23. Everybody wins with Country Suppers Lending her talent Top fiddler and composer Anne Lederman will assist the Blyth Festival Young Company members this summer. By Janice Becker Citizen staff With tales of fairies and wee folk, members of the Young Company will discover Celtic stories and myths. Under the guidance of associate artistic director Gil Garratt, the Young Company will perform Washer of the Ford and Other Celtic Tales. “It is a huge exploration of Celtic stories,” said Garratt. “We look at the kid’s role in the play and how part of themselves is in it. We look at centuries of stories that kept these people going.” Garratt, who has been working with the Young Company for three years, immensely enjoys his role in teaching the youth how to interpret stories while watching them grow into more confident individuals. He tells of one young woman who was quite reserved when she first began with Young Company. Now she is directing a production at her high school. “It is fantastic for me to see young people expand and open up, to look at the world in a new and critical way. It is very fulfilling.” In Washer of the Ford, Garratt sees similarities with the young people who will perform the show. The stories are rural stories about an agricultural society. It is Celtic heritage and though they may have been known as warriors, they were mostly farmers, said Garratt. He will also have some wonderful help in teaching the young people about Celtic traditions. Anne Lederman from The Outdoor Donnellys will be working with them on Celtic songs, hopefully in Gaelic, said Garratt. Mary Beth Badian will be teaching them the basics of theatre skills. Not only will the performers learn from the stories, but also Garratt hopes the audience will also “explore another world” through their telling. Of working with the Young Company, Garratt said it is demanding yet a fulfilling social experience. “There is a real age range, from 14 to 21. They all look From the very early years Festival goers have had the chance to get a real taste of Huron County by attending one of the numerous country suppers. These suppers prepared by the Legion Auxiliary, Women’s Institutes and church women’s groups are served at locations in Auburn, Blyth, Belgrave, Bluevale and Walton. Many urban Festival patrons now consider their “country supper” an essential part of the Blyth festival experience. The same faces can be seen showing up at the same suppers year after year. Leona McDonald, of the Walton Women’s Institute says, “You recognize some of them as they come in but some are always new.” She commented, “They think it’s wonderful to get out into the country.” Although McDonald did not know the most distant place from which the diners had arrived she did say they sometimes had guests by the bus-load from places like Sarnia. Janice Henry, of the Blyth Legion Ladies Auxiliary says they have one party that comes up from the States. She _has watched that family grow fl with a babe-in-arms last year. She said, “They come because the g food really is homemade and they fl also buy the jams and pickles that the ® Auxiliary has for sale.” The fare is traditional and would fl be familiar to any local resident. M Mashed potatoes, coleslaw, vegetables and meat served in fl generous portions, by people who M actually seem to enjoy talking to you. fl The desert table is heavily laden M with homemade goodies of which, a diet fanatic would definitely not r approve. As always pride of place goes to the pies which the women of the area seem to be able to produce in infinite numbers and spectacular quality. This year the Huron County Pork Producers will be showing off the quality of their product with a Put Pork on Your Fork dinner on Aug. 9. At $12 dollars the regular country suppers provide the theatre patron with an affordable country-casual alternate to restaurant dining. As affordable as they are for the diner they provide local organizations with a valuable source of funds to support community projects. The total raised over the years the dinners have been held is impossible to calculate. Last year alone over $16,000 was raised through this simple country tradition.
