Duff’s United Church
marks its anniversary
A wonderful attendance of
worshippers were greeted at Duff’s
United Church’s anniversary service
by Heidi and Jennifer McClure.
The service began with a song, A
Place in the Choir, by the youth
choir. Words of welcome to
everyone were expressed by Rev.
Joan Tuchlinsky and a birthday wish
went to Mary Humphries on the
occasion of her 85th birthday on
Tuesday,
The flowers adorning the front of
the sanctuary were placed by the
family in loving memory of Idella
Hubley.
Rev. Joan called board chair Karen
Hoegy to the front for a presentation.
Rev. Charles Swan presented to her,
and Duff’s United Church, 25 copies
of his latest book Power Living in
These Days. They are a collection of
his past sermons to give faith, hope,
and guidance in today’s problems.
Karen thanked Rev. Charles for his
generous gift.
He also presented a copy of his
first book No Turning Back Now and
his new book to Rev. Joan for her
personnel collection.
The adult choir sang Nothing is
Impossible.
The children gathered at the front
of the church and Rev. Joan showed
them a piece of cake. She suggested
to them that the piece of cake was for
two reasons, one being to celebrate
Pentecost or the birthday of the
church and the other the 138th
anniversary of Duff’s United
Church. She then read the story
Happy Birthday Church.
Congregants welcomed the Gospel
4 U Quartet from the Walkerton area
to sing When We All Get Together
and Search Me Lord.
Rev. Swan read the gospel reading,
then recalled his time in Walton. He
had fond memories of playing
euchre, having tea and visiting.
He told of his trip to England from
which he has just returned. He
followed the pilgrimage of John
Wesley, the founder of social service
and evangelism. John Wesley
travelled over 250,000 miles on
horseback to spread the ministry and
Acorns
have
dress-up
days
The Walton Little School Acorn
class enjoyed some special dress-up
days including a P.J. day, crazy
clothes day and silly socks or shoes
day.
They are enjoying some great
books and learning to read simple
sight words. They are also enjoying
their new riding toys and sand toys
for outside.
Duff’s United Church was filled
with parents and family members of
the school’s concert and graduation
night on June 19. Around 20
children graduated and wore their
caps and received a small present.
Approximately 66 children were
involved in class productions. The
toddlers performed a butterfly poem
and the junior pre-schoolers
performed nursery rhymes, the ABC
song and Sleeping Beauty.
The senior preschool’s sang I
Know an Old Lady who Swallowed
the Acorns.
Presentations were made to the
Parent Advisory Committee, Jeff
McGavin and the teachers.
wrote over 7,000 hymns some of
which are still sung.
Rev. Swan reports he still believes
that laughter is good medicine and
repeated a few of his humorous lines
such as, A minister is someone who
talks in someone else’s sleep.
He suggested that an anniversary
is a time to review the life of the
church and to set new goals for the
continuing life of the church.
While the offering was taken by
Howard Hackwell and Graeme Craig
the Gospel 4U Quartet sang My Lord
and I and Count on Me.
The congregation sang Grace in a
round prior to the end of service led
by choir members Marie McGavin,
Marion Godkin and Gloria Wilbee.
Sharing their gifts of music for the
service were Glenda Morrison,
Phyllis Mitchell, Brian Black and the
youth and adult choirs. Everyone
was invited to join together for lunch
downstairs following the Gospel 4U
Quartet’s final song Goodbye World,
Goodbye.
There were many old and new
friends of Duff’s United in
attendance. Many from Bluevale
congregation, Brussels, Seaforth,
Kitchener, London, Wingham and
surrounding area enjoyed the service
and a visit with Rev. Swan
following.
A pastoral charge board meeting is
Tuesday, July 8 at 8 p.m. in Walton.
Rev. Joan is on holidays from
Aug. 11 to Monday, Sept. 1.

Congratulations to Joan Perrie who
was participating in the Senior
games. She was participating in the
50-metre sprint (in 56 seconds) and
the 200 prediction swim. She won
two golds. A prediction swim is you
have to guess how long it will take
you to do the event and how close
you are to the time.
Also, participating in bridge and
euchre, were locals Jeanne Kirkby,
Maggie Lacroix, Elsie Carter and
Linda Vir. They enjoyed their
experience.
Participants were from Perth,
Middlesex and Huron Counties.
The Community Living
Association held its annual golf
tournament at the Wingham Golf and
Country Club. Graeme, Helen and
Michael Craig participated, they
played nine holes and dinner
followed. They had a good day and
lots of fun.
Condolences to the McCallum
family on the passing of Pearl’s
mother, Idella Hubley. The funeral
was held in Seaforth with the lunch
being served at Duff’s United
Church.
Congrats to Laura Black on
celebrating a birthday. She hosted a
sleepover party and played ball at the
Walton Park for some of her
girlfriends.
It was a thrill of a lifetime for two
area guys. Matt Lee and Larry
Dalrymple attended the NHL Awards
evening in Toronto at the Convention
Centre. Friends of Larry managed to
secure them tickets and they were
only 15 rows from the front. They
said it was awesome and they had a
great time.
On Friday evening it was the
Cancer Relay for Life walk field at
Goderich District Collegiate Institute.
A local team of Chris, Judy, Matt and
Tracey Lee, Larry Dalrymple, Cheryl
Thompson and Janmaat family
members Kim, Tommy, Trevor and
more participated in the 12-hour relay
walk from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Organizers were overwhelmed by the
response. Some 58 teams registered
and raised well over $130,000.
Money is still coming in.
Chris Lee and Tracy Lee both
participated in the Survivors of
Cancer walk held from 6-7 p.m. We
congratulate them all on a job well
done.

week visiting with Kathleen and
other family and friends.
Graeme and Michael Craig
travelled to Flesherton to attend a
show put on by the Southeast Grey
Community Living Association.
They went by bus with 20 other
members from the Wingham area to
enjoy the day. There were three live
bands and a delicious rib dinner.
Sunday was the day of St. Anne’s
graduation mass at 2 p.m. There were
about 60 graduating students of
which Sarah Williamson was one.
Attending were Tom and Joyce,
Katie, Nicole and grandma Kathleen

4-Hers
visit store
The Ethel Thyme to Veg 4-H club
went on an outing for their fifth
meeting.
On Friday, June 6, they went on a
tour of the produce department of
Zehrs in Listowel. Anne, department
manager, showed them the different
varieties of unusual fruits and
vegetables that Zehrs carries.
Next the 4-H club toured the
Listowel Greenhouses where the
owner, Frank Stuys, showed them
the variety of herbs and vegetables
they sell for people to grow at home.
He also showed the 4-Hers the
strawberries and asparagus that they
grow and sell at the greenhouses.
The 4-Hers got to sample fresh
asparagus straight from the field.
The Ethel 4-H club found their
outing very informative and
enjoyable.
On June 7 the Ethel and Bluevale
4-H club members helped serve at
the Brussels Lions Club Elimination
Draw.
The Ethel Thyme to Veg held its
final meeting on June 17. A
discussion followed on herbal teas.
The 4-H ers went outside to pick
