Duff’s United Church marks its anniversary A wonderful attendance of worshippers were greeted at Duff’s United Church’s anniversary service by Heidi and Jennifer McClure. The service began with a song, A Place in the Choir, by the youth choir. Words of welcome to everyone were expressed by Rev. Joan Tuchlinsky and a birthday wish went to Mary Humphries on the occasion of her 85th birthday on Tuesday, The flowers adorning the front of the sanctuary were placed by the family in loving memory of Idella Hubley. Rev. Joan called board chair Karen Hoegy to the front for a presentation. Rev. Charles Swan presented to her, and Duff’s United Church, 25 copies of his latest book Power Living in These Days. They are a collection of his past sermons to give faith, hope, and guidance in today’s problems. Karen thanked Rev. Charles for his generous gift. He also presented a copy of his first book No Turning Back Now and his new book to Rev. Joan for her personnel collection. The adult choir sang Nothing is Impossible. The children gathered at the front of the church and Rev. Joan showed them a piece of cake. She suggested to them that the piece of cake was for two reasons, one being to celebrate Pentecost or the birthday of the church and the other the 138th anniversary of Duff’s United Church. She then read the story Happy Birthday Church. Congregants welcomed the Gospel 4 U Quartet from the Walkerton area to sing When We All Get Together and Search Me Lord. Rev. Swan read the gospel reading, then recalled his time in Walton. He had fond memories of playing euchre, having tea and visiting. He told of his trip to England from which he has just returned. He followed the pilgrimage of John Wesley, the founder of social service and evangelism. John Wesley travelled over 250,000 miles on horseback to spread the ministry and Acorns have dress-up days The Walton Little School Acorn class enjoyed some special dress-up days including a P.J. day, crazy clothes day and silly socks or shoes day. The senior preschool’s sang I Know an Old Lady who Swallowed the Acorns. Presentations were made to the Parent Advisory Committee, Jeff McGavin and the teachers. wrote over 7,000 hymns some of which are still sung. Rev. Swan reports he still believes that laughter is good medicine and repeated a few of his humorous lines such as, A minister is someone who talks in someone else’s sleep. He suggested that an anniversary is a time to review the life of the church and to set new goals for the continuing life of the church. While the offering was taken by Howard Hackwell and Graeme Craig the Gospel 4U Quartet sang My Lord and I and Count on Me. The congregation sang Grace in a round prior to the end of service led by choir members Marie McGavin, Marion Godkin and Gloria Wilbee.
