Dousing the flames
The Blyth Fire Department responded quickly to a tractor fire during the lunch hour Monday
when flames erupted from the engine of the old Massey Ferguson driven by Merv Datema as
he raked hay on his son-in-law Eric Nonkes’s farm in Hullett. The firefighters were called to
Blyth Public School shortly after 3:30 p.m. when sparks were seen shooting from a hydro pole.
It was discovered that a small branch had come in contact with the wires causing the problem.
Hydro One was called in to remove a few branches, (jamce Becker photo)

On June 19 the Auburn Women’s
Institute held its meeting with a visit
to Jason Lucio Art. The members
saw his display, which included a
full-size owl carved and painted by
Jason. He also had song birds sitting
on a branch and several duck
decoys.
He told how he did his carvings
and the tools he uses. Some of the
pieces he is working on right now
are a cardinal and a small owl. He
also holds carving classes.
Congratulations Jason for winning
the 33rd Annual Ward World
Championship Wildfowl Carving
Competition, 2003, Best in the
world for Floating Decorative
Lifestyle Waterfowl Pairs in Ocean
City Maryland.
The meeting continued in the
Auburn Community Hall and
Maxine Seers demonstrated how to
make a rose keepsake/ring holder.
The rose staried with a small brandy
snifter glass and a bunch of artificial
roses separated into individual petals
and glued to the glass. It turned out
just like a rose with the small centre
of the artificial rose as the top of the
holder, a place where rings,
potpourri or keepsakes can be kept.
Lunch was served by Jean Plaetzer
and Mildred Lawlor.
The winner of the prizes was
Maxine Seers, and the one with the
nearest birthday to the meeting date
was Marg Fraser.
