The Blyth men’s slowpitch league after many years of
success has been called out on strikes. With the declining
numbers of new ball players the league could not survive.
They did however, throw one last pitch as league president
Ken Siertsema, right, hands Heart and Soul campaign
chairman Todd MacDonald a cheque for $2,100 on the
league’s behalf. (Photo submitted)

U-6 II soccer squad
defeats hometown rival
It was a very successful night for
Brussels U-6 II soccer squad, when
they earned a first win recently
against a hometown opponent.
With a light breeze in the air this
team of soccer players were ready to
take on the challenge. Although
down a couple of players, there still
managed to be great team spirit and
lots of effort.
Dalton Hamilton scored the first
goal of the night with some great
assistance from. Charity Nonkes and
Dawson Peachy. Laura Souch, Seth
Nichol and Shaelyn Cloakey did a
fantastic job of protecting their
team’s net and getting the ball

with a goal by Ashley Stevenson.
Moments later, a second goal by
Nicholas Zwep gave them a two goal
lead.
Team III put forth a good effort
and kept the ball in their opponents’
end which resulted in a goal being
scored by Lexi Smith.
Later on in the first half, Wyatt
Ducharme scored his first goal of the
game and scored another within
minutes, following up with yet

Kai Heimstra worked hard at his
turn in net. Dalen Martin, Conner
Bridge, Eric Van Nes and Jenna
Thompson played well together and
kept the ball away from their end of
the field. Johanna Blake made a
superb save while in the goalie
position. Alexandra Martin did a
great job at kicking the bail back into
play and trying to stay up with her
team. While in net, Owen Hamilton
had little to worry about as this time
players made his job easy by
keeping the ball at the other end of
the field.
The final score was 4-0.

This coming weekend will be very
busy as Ethel hosts the annual
weekend-long three-pitch ball
tournament and the Grey Twp.
firefighters cook up some grub at
their breakfast on Sunday morning.
The ball tournament raises funds
for the ball program in town or ball
park maintenance. This year the
money raised will go towards
lighting at the ball diamond. So far,
14 teams are registered for the
tournament which begins Friday.
The firefighters’ breakfast, which
runs from 8 a.m. until noon on
Sunday, is also a fundraiser. The
breakfast fund helps the firefighters
pay for supplies and equipment not
allotted for in their operating budget
from the municipality.
Ethel United Church is still
accepting hats for their Caps for
Kids campaign. The new or gently-
used hats can be given to any church
member in a tied plastic bag with the
contents labelled on the outside.
Just a reminder that the church
will be open for a hat drop off on
June 28 from 10-11 a.m. Peter
Huitema, a team member heading to
South America with the hats, is
scheduled to speak at the Ethel
United Church at 9:30 a.m. and
anyone is welcome to attend.
On the topic of fundraising, I have
spoken to people at the Blyth
Festival about bringing some
childrenJs theatre out this way and it
seems that it might actually happen
during the last week of August.
Blyth’s Young Company will be
performing the Celtic folktale, The
Washer at the Ford (apparently
complete with some live Celtic
music) and during the last week of
August, the young actors travel
around with the play. For a low fee
and donations at the door (which
will roll back into the Young
Theatre) they will perform one show
at our community hall.
I am quite excited at the prospect
of our children, and community
members being able to enjoy this
event. If any readers could donate
toward covering the performance
fee, that wold be most generous and
greatly appreciated.
The Young Company also asks to
be guaranteed an audience of at least
30. Please see the Blyth Festival
brochure for info about The Washer
at the Ford and call me if I can be of
assistance.
Grey firefighters held their
monthly training meeting last week,
travelling to Molesworth feedmill
for practice on the pumper. Some of
the firefighters were fitted that night
as the suggestion was brought
forward recently to purchase jackets

Some of the firefighters who
possess a DZ driver’s licence went
to Brussels last Wednesday night to
familiarize themselves with where to
get water for the pumper should
Brussels get a firecall in the near
future. Brussels is having repairs
done to the water system and would
not be able to use the hydrants
should a call come in, until the
repairs are complete.
Finally, it came to my attention
that Mr. Bill Eckmeier celebrated his
75th birthday recently. Happy
belated birthday, Mr. Eckmeier.
Have a great week and hopefully
we see lots of people in Ethel this
weekend having fun and enjoying
good food, all the while investing in
our community. Take care.
