Lance Magdziak St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church Dear Friends: In our Christian Churches the beginning of June marks the Fast of Pentecost - the day dedicated to the Holy Spirit. For a few days I have been wondering about the best image of the Holy Spirit. How can I talk about the realities of the Spirit? Anyone can try - it is not easy! Perhaps the following story can help all of us. My mother told me this story many times. It is about a great Polish pianist, Ignace Paderewski - we have to go back in history at least 60 years. A mother took her five-year-old son to a concert by the famous Maestro Paderewski. She was sitting close to the stage. Then she saw an old friend sitting nearby. She got involved talking with her friend and did not notice her son leaving his seat. When the spotlight fell on the piano on stage, she noticed her boy picking out Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. Before she could do anything, Maestro Paderewski walked over to her son and said, “Son, keep playing!” Then, leaning over the boy, he reached out his left hand and began filling in the bass. Then he reached around and encircling the boy, added a running obbligato. Together, the Maestro and the boy mesmerized the audience. My Friends, Pentecost or the Coming of the Holy Spirit which we celebrate at the end of the Easter Season is precisely the image of what our God can do to us as He did to Jesus’ followers! If you are one of them, believe it can bring greatness to you! Melville news Last Sunday morning was Pentecost Sunday. It was also Communion Sunday at Melville Presbyterian Church. Greeters at the door were Jim and Leona Armstrong. The organist was Crystal McClellan, and Rev. Cathrine Campbell was back from general assembly in Guelph to conduct the service. Following the organ prelude, a recorder duet played by Matthew Cardiff and Kasey King opened the service. The choir sang the anthem, Here is Bread, Here is Wine, accompanied by Mary Douma. This was followed by the congregation’s responsive reading of Psalm 104:24 -35. As reader, Gordon Mitchell assisted Rev. Campbell with the scripture selections of Ezekiel 37: 1 - 14; Acts 2: 1 - 21; and John 15: 26 - 27, 16: 1 - 16. The sermon. Comings and Goings, was Rev. Campbell’s reflection on her week at the general assembly which reminded her of the original Pentecost with many people coming together from many different areas and speaking with different perspectives,, yet coming together in understanding. She described the people she met Continued on page 22 Solemn occasion Pastor Les Cook of Blyth Community Church of God led the service for the annual Decoration Day at Blyth Union Cemetery.
