Sheep producers deal with
American border closure

Beyond the evaporated market for
Canadian beef and deadstock and
rendering companies having
nowhere to sell their product, lamb
and goat producers are also suffering
from BSE fallout.
In a release issued by the Ontario
Sheep Marketing Agency (OSMA)
late last week, “prices tumbled” at
the end of May.
However, the market showed
some recovery June 5, said Len
Gamble of Brussels Livestock. “The
good fed lambs, 70 to 90 lbs., were
selling on fully steady trade with
prices ranging from $135 to $150 up
from $132 to $142.
While prices may be taking a
roller coaster ride, the lamb volumes
have remained steady. Brussels saw
169 more for the May 29 sale than
weighed 1,580 lbs. which sold to
Dominion Meats for $103.50. His
overall offering of eight steers
averaged 1,538 lbs. selling for an
average price of $99.90.
Cunningham Farms, Lucan,
consigned forty steers averaging
1,463 lbs. which sold for an average
of $98.57 with their top two
limousin steers averaging 1,290 lbs.
selling to Norwich Packers for
$105.50.
One gold steer consigned by J.K.
Gielen Farms, Crediton, weighed
1,260 lbs. selling to Highland
Packers Ltd. for $102.50. Their
overall offering of twenty steers
averaged 1,441 lbs. selling for an
average of $97.78. Mahlon Weber,
Paisiey, consigned ten steers
averaging 1,540 lbs. which sold for
an average price of $96.14 with his
top red wf steer weighing 1,405 lbs.
selling to Norwich Packers for
$101.50. One charolais steer
consigned by Clare Shantz, Chesley,
weighed 1,275 lbs. selling to
Dominion Meats for $99.50. His
overall offering of ten steers
averaged 1,332 lbs. selling for an
average price of $96.03. Ivan B.
Weber, Paisley, consigned seven
steers averaging 1,400 lbs. which
sold for an average price of $94.17
with his top charolais steer weighing
the previous week.
Keith Todd, a young sheep farmer
near Lucknow, believes the volume
remains up because many producers
do not have the facilities to keep the
lambs and feed them to heavier
weight.
“Some fear the prices could go
lower so they are taking the hit
now.”
The closing of the border to all
ruminant animals, which includes
sheep, goats and deer, amongst
others, has resulted in changed
shipping patterns in the industry as
well, he said.
“The American prices (for lamb)
have been really strong until
now,” he said, so western lamb was
going south and 1,000 Ontario
lambs per month were being shipped
to Michigan and the eastern
seaboard. “Western lambs are now
coming into Ontario because we still

have a strong demand for heavy
lambs.”
Though price drops at this time of
year are typical, OSMA said not to
this degree.
In numbers issued by OSMA for
the sale dates of May 29/June 2,
light lamb prices (under 50 pounds)
were off almost $13 per hundred
weight in Brussels and $31.27 at the
Ontario Stockyards.
While the Ontario Stockyards
made up the price in heavy
animals (110 lbs. plus) with a rise of
$80.62 over the previous week,
prices in all categories fell
dramatically in Brussels. The largest
drop was in the 95 to 109 lb. weight
class with prices down $35.45.
There was no change in heavy lamb
prices.
Gamble said though there are not a
lot of goats on offer, they were
holding steady this past week.
