Belgrave Squirts edge Brussels squad
The second game of the season for
the Brussels Squirts took place on
Monday, June 2 at 7 p.m. against
Belgrave.
With one of the team’s pitchers,
Brianne Wheeler away, the players
knew it wasn’t going to be an easy
time and they would have to work
hard for any chance of a win.
Starting on the mound for Brussels
was Melinda Dorsch, who put in a
solid performance.
Belgrave jumped to an early lead
as they ended their half of the first
inning.
At Brussels’ first bat, things
Atom
Thunder
looked promising with the lead-off
batter, Evan Ducharme, hitting a
triple. Other good hits and strong
base running came from Ryan
Smith, Cole McLean, Brad
Quesenberry and Ben Gowing, who
also did a great job as shortstop and
catcher for parts of the game.
Some great defensive plays were
made in both the infield and outfield
by Alex Sholdice, Andrew Lindsay,
and Westin McLeod. Nice catches
were made by Ducharme, and
Quesenberry. Some power hitting
was demonstrated by Westin
McLeod with two homeruns and
Robert Cronin with one.
With the score tied Andrew
Lindsay took over duties as pitcher,
while Smith suited up to catch.
Brussels tried to hold off Belgrave
from getting any runs but they were
able to get two home safely.
By game end the score was
Belgrave 17, Brussels 15.
The team’s next game was to have
been on Wednesday, June 4 in Varna
but it was cancelled due to rain.
Monday, June 9 the Squirts play in
Brussels at 7 p.m. at the town
diamond against Zurich. Following
this game the team’s next home
game will be June 16 at 7 p.m. at the
town diamond.
loses 4-1
The fifth game of the Blyth
Thunder Atom team was played in
Lucknow at the Ralph Morrison
Field, on June 3 against the
Lucknow 2 team. All Blyth Thunder
players had lots of playing time on
the field during this game, as they
were missing several players.
Jasmine deBoer, game captain,
started the game as outside left
forward. The first goal was scored
by Lucknow on a penalty shot
against Thunder goalkeeper, Kurtis
Kolkman.
Kolkman did make some nice
saves during the game, later
stopping a goal from being scored
on yet another penalty shot.
Lucknow went on to score three
more goals.
Blyth’s only score of the game
was by Michael McDowell, with an
assist by deBoer.
The game was a rough one and
icepacks were needed for Andrew
Bos and Larissa Jenkins.
The final score was 4-1 for
Lucknow.
