What a good place to visit - a
place of peace and warmth and
sunshine. The space on this earth
that is called Point Pelee, the
southern-most tip of Canada was a
joy to visit. The birds were in full
chorus, the vegetation, some specific
only to this latitude was green and
lush. Like many things you wonder
why it took so long to get there, like
all the National Parks, it is a treasure
spot with protection and well worth
a repeat visit.
We’re just finished with Earth Day
and Environment Week and while

Lois Lee’s Grade 2 class hosted a literacy festival on Friday
at Brussels Public School. The class read their stories,
which they have spent the year writing, editing, and re
writing, to the kindergarten and Grade 1 classes. (Sarah Mann

we have lots to celebrate and enjoy,
we have a challenge ahead if we are
to preserve a healthy world for our
descendants. The air we pollute, the
gas we burn and the energy we
waste, all take a piece from the
stability of the world. Each of us has
a part to play - turning off a light,
car pooling, shutting off vehicles if
not leaving in less than a minute and
recycling and reusing. These are all
things we can do daily.
The bigger things take a
community and commitment if we
hope to leave clean water, good
earth, breathable air and all the
animals in their home environments
for our grandchildren.
The theme from Mississauga “1-2-
3 Tum off Your Key” needs to be
heard here. If it’s not in motion -
shut it off! We can help cut the 75
million minutes of idling Canadians
cars - a day.
So as we still retain ideas that we
heard from Environment week - do
something, an} little thing to get and

Agnes Schell invited friends and
family to help her celebrate the good
news of David and Shannon. Later
this month Miss Robinson will
become Mrs. Proux. The party on
Sunday was a grand seal of approval
with plenty of chatter and laughter,
food and gifts. Agnes’s houseful of
guests gave their enthusiastic
approval and had a good time doing
it.
Each spring for over 30 years the
Brussels Lions Club has been
hosting its elimination draw. The
fellow who brought the new idea to
us was smiling from heaven on
Saturday night as Phyllis Beacom
won the big money. Lion Bill
convinced the other club members
that the combined dinner and draw,
with incentives would work as a
fundraiser.
At the Branch
Legion prepares for auction
By Jo-Ann McDonald
Everyone is busy at the Brussels
Legion Branch getting ready for the
auction this weekend. We are still
waiting for all the donations to
arrive, witn Thursday being the
deadline unless it is a perishable
item, then Friday’s the day.
The Friday night supper of
chicken wings was enjoyed by all.
This week is lasagna.
On Saturday there were 13 tables
of avid euchre players seeking the
top prize. Coming out on top were
Jim Coultes and Mabel Wheeler
with 74 points. The second and
third-place prize money was shared
among three couples. Eileen Sellers

Thank goodness they listened and
for many years the community
quickly says thanks to the Lions and
buys their ticket.
Each ticket holder will have their
own story for attending but some
that I know include youth exchange
stories, financial help in times of
crisis, support of children and
parents during illness, the swimming
pool, community parades and sports
are but a few.
So thanks for the years of
commitment of the Lions and their
partners who have fed us and
supported our community for years.
Take time this week and tell them.
And Phyllis we’re glad you’re
getting a little return on the many
dollars invested in Brussels over the
years.
Enjoy June.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
and Marie Stewart, Tom and Eileen
Sloan and Rita and Verna all had 73
points. There was a battle for bottom
place as well. A score of 43 points
was shared by Jeanne Ireland and
Elunid McNair and Charlie and
Millie McDonald. The lucky lone
hand winners were Ivan Bennewies
and Vera Schmidt.

NEWS
FROM BRUSSELS
The singles dance crowd of over
100 are loving the floor and danced
up a storm to Blue Diamond Trio.
Two members of Branch 218
enjoyed the Zone golf day held in
Mitchell on Saturday. Comrades
Eric Ross and Pete Exel had a good
day but weren’t the best golfers on
the greens. Maybe next time.
