Donna Knight was hostess for the
Cranbrook Women’s Missionary
meeting on Tuesday night, May 13.
Leader, Yvonne Knight’s topic was
Mothers. She opened with a reading
What is a Mother?
Homegrown Wisdom was what
many of the older mothers
possessed. They knew many of the
older remedies that are still in use.
They also taught religion as well as
the three Rs to their children.
Over the years tribute is paid to
the wonderful mothers who taught
manners, religion, and obedience.
Step-mothers must not be
forgotten either. They should receive
support and recognition for the role
they play.
Scripture was read from
Ephesians 5: 1-8, 17-21. Prayer was
offered by Mrs. Knight then
everyone joined in The Lord’s
Prayer.
Eleanor Stevenson read the
minutes of the last meeting and took
the roll call. Mrs. Knight gave the
treasurer’s report.
Mrs. Stevenson attended the
Synodical meeting in Wingham on
April 23. She reported that there
were 230 in attendance. The
speaker’s topic for the day was

The ultraviolet light which has
been deemed necessary by
government regulations to cleanse
the water for those providing water
to public places, has now been
installed for the Cranbrook Hall.
Since Murray and Freda Crawford
supply water to Cranbrook Hall, this
fixture has now been installed in the
basement. The work was done by
Phil Turner and his workman from
Seaforth. If you would like to see it

Ross and Betty Knight celebrated
their wedding anniversary on May

The Cranbrook Community
Centre was the place to be on
Saturday night as the family of
Michael and Dorothy Gulutzen held
a 40th wedding anniversary dinner
in their honour. Friends and former
neighbours attended a come and go
tea later in the evening.

Sunday supper
Ethel and area residents met last
week for the May Community
Oriented Policing meeting and came
away with complementary smoke
detectors and food for thought.
Grey Twp. Fire Chief Calvin
Semple and Deputy Fire Chief Dave
Diehl informed the group on topics
that included fires at suspected
“meth or speed” lab locations, fire
evacuation plans for families and
chimney fire prevention. The
firefighters then invited those
present to tour the firehall after the
meeting.
The Property Standards Bylaw for
Huron East was discussed at length
as community members brought
forth concerns regarding unkempt
and potentially dangerous properties
in the hamlet.
Councillor Alvin McLellan was on
hand to explain the bylaw and
suggest that any written concerns
would be addressed by Paul Josling,
chief building official for Huron
East.
Enforcing the bylaw also falls
under Mr. Josling’s jurisdiction.
Discussion of the status of the
“three-way stop” in Ethel prompted
comments from community
members worried about the high
number of children on bicycles not
wearing helmets who are racing
through the dangerous intersection.
OPP Const. Dave Gillan responded
by saying that although there are
fines in excess of $60 for not

united in marriage by Rev. Hugh C.
Wilson. The bridal couple was
attended by Annie Straughan and

After a honeymoon trip in
Muskoka the newlyweds returned to
the area to begin their new life.
Through the marriage they lived at

Tom worked as a farmer,

Tips for responsible gambling
Milestone
(NC) - For many people,
gambling is exciting and
entertaining. They make careful
decisions about spending time and
money, where to go and how to have
fun.
The following are some ways
people gamble responsibly:
• Gamble for entertainment, not as a
way to make money
• Balance gambling with other
leisure activities
• Only use discretionary income,
not money for everyday expenses
• Set a budget and stick to it. If you
have lost the money you budgeted
for gambling - stop
• Don’t borrow money to gamble
• Avoid on-site cash machines for
additional gambling money
wearing a helmet, “it falls back,
largely, on parental responsibility.”
Children under 18 years of age are
required, by law, to wear a certified
helmet when riding a bike.
Several concerns about ATVs were
noted both from home owners as
well as vehicle drivers. In response
to complaints of ATV users driving
in Ethel, Const. Gillan explained that
it is illegal to drive these recreational
vehicles on public streets and
charges can be laid.
Frustration over ATV use mounted
when motorists told of travelling
north on Molesworth Line and
having to avoid ATV and dirt bike
drivers who “pop out” of the ditch by
the ATV track and onto the paved
road, posing quite a danger to both
parties.
Although ideas were suggested to
possibly resolve the matter, it was
decided to forward the complaint on
to the County of Huron Roads
Department.
Cleanup of the Conservation Area
at Krauter Line was another topic
brought forth, so that the area might
be restored for public use. The high
volume of hunters on that land was
of considerable concern.
Const. Gillan suggested that
restoring the area might potentially
send a message that hunters are not
welcomed.
Grey Twp. firefighters had their
monthly meeting recently.
Deputy Fire Chief Dave Diehl
extended a public welcome to Pete
Alberts and Phil Graber who have
recently joined (he department. At
the meeting the firefighters worked
on training with the breathing
apparatus and, along with other
business, laid plans for their annual
firefighters’ breakfast.

Tom is a great sports fan,
particularly baseball. He also loves
fishing, hunting and skeet-shooting
Ruth is involved in church
organizations, and enjoys quilting
and socializing.
A family celebration to mark the
occasion was held at 274 Gypsy
Lane, Blyth. Greetings were
received from Queen Elizabeth,
Prime Minister Chrdtien and other
dignitaries. A special letter from a
grandson in Kuwait also arrived.
A highlight of the day was having
their son Lyman home from B.C. for
the occasion.
