(Bonnie Gropp photo) Trapping identifies species Continued from page 1 last year because of the crow diagnosed in late July. However, trapping will determine if the carrier mosquito, the Culex species, is in the county before a decision on larvicide is made. The health unit considers any decision made by municipalities or individuals, before the information is received as premature. The committee will formulate a contingency plan should a risk arise as well as look at ecological and epidemiological methods of prevention, said Henning. Trained personnel to apply the larvicide would also be required. The health unit reiterates the precautionary measures which should be taken by individuals, homeowners and business owners. All areas of standing, stagnant water should be eliminated. Personal protection such as proper clothing and correct use of repellents with DEET should be worn. Mosquitoes are most active at dusk, dawn and during the night or in heavily- wooded and bush area. There are 57 species of mosquitoes, most of which do not carry the virus. The carrier Culex also prefers to bite birds rather than humans. Over 55 attended the 70th anniversary celebration of Morning Star Rebekah Lodge at the Brussels Royal Canadian Legion on Wednesday, May 21. Musical prelude was provided by Sister Joyce Jacklin. Toast to the Queen, by Sister Laura Barbour was followed by O Canada. Sister Sarah Stephenson led in singing Grace. The Legion Ladies were thanked by Sister Lillian Moses for the delicious roast beef dinner. A candle was lit by Sister Elva Brown to commemorate the 70th anniversary. Sister Betty Cardiff lit a candle in memory of deceased members of the lodge. This was followed by the lighting of a candle to the Rebekah Assembly of Ontario by Sister Isa Rabbets. Head table guests were Noble Grand Sister Gertie Kellington and her husband Bill; District Deputy President of Huron-Perth District 23, Sister Isa Rabbets and her husband Bev; Vice Grand Sister Elva Brown and Letter to the editor Writer annoyed by Tory ‘propaganda’ THE EDITOR, Weil dam. I was just going to compliment the Tories on finally sending us a pamphlet that was factual, informative and helpful to its citizens. The West Nile Virus pamphlet was all those things with a minimum of self congratulations by the government. Perhaps it was composed by some of the civil servants, like health service personnel, who do the actual work Then my Maclean’s arrived. Inside was a 30-page glossy supplement filled with propaganda for the Tory government. Thirty pages! I shudder to think of how much we paid for that. Television propaganda has increased as well with all kinds of vague, warm fuzzies on how well things are going despite loud and varied voices to the contrary. Again, the citizens of Ontario foot the bill for this blatant Tory advertising. Then another piece of propaganda landed on my door. It was the Education Report with more vague references. There is reference to improved international testing. Which tests? Where do I find the posted facts on the results? They state that the provincial test results have improved, but how do we know? The government is entirely in control of creating and marking the tests. It is impossible to compare the results of those tests with any other jurisdiction. Teachers are not even allowed to keep a copy of the test. (If you want to see some posted results on a more reliable international test conducted by the her husband John and M.C. for the evening Sister Joyce Jacklin. Another dignitary present was Brother Don Swan, Deputy Grand Master of Grand Lodge of Ontario. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of jewels by Sister Isa Rabbets to Sister Marie McTaggart who received her 60-year and Sister Edna Pearson her 50-year jewel. They also received a certificate from Rebekah Assembly of Ontario for their many years of service. On behalf of MP Paul Steckle, Sister Gertie presented a plaque to sisters Marie and Edna. In attendance were several members of their families. Prior to dinner, Sister Isa Rabbets visited Sister Retta Hoover at Huronlea. She is the only surviving charter member and was presented with a 70-year certificate from R.A. of Ontario. Present were Sister Retta’s daughters Marion and Sylvia. Greetings were received Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development, check out www.pisa.gc.ca) In the pamphlet, the government takes credit for policies which have always been in place injschools, such as codes of conduct for students or teacher performance appraisals. (The one thing they do not take credit for is their one true legacy to all our systems and that is tons and tons of paperwork. What used to be one page forms, are now six. And the forms keep changing! Whatever happened to that red tape committee, anyway?) Then there are the untruths that litter the pamphlet with references to the Rozanski Report, assuring us all that the changes have been made. Those in the system know that financial announcements made in the media are undermined by the imposition on boards of new methods of accounting that take money away. It’s one step forward but two steps back with this government. They are It Starts with You! www.pitch-in.ca PITCH-IN CANADA! from Stratford, St. Marys, Listowel, Exeter and Clinton lodges. Anniversary congratulations from Rebekah Assembly of Ontario were conveyed by Sister Isa Rabbets and Grand Lodge of Ontario by Brother Don Swan. Entertainment was provided by Ayrn, Jillian and Averley Kikkert with piano solos. Skits and musical numbers were performed by Kristen, Tyson, Austin, Madison and Quintin Sjaarda joined by their parents Brenda and Bert for several numbers. Madison Sjaarda gave her speech. Readings were given by two sisters from St. Marys and Sister Joyce Jacklin gave a humorous reading. Ticket draws were made by Sisters Isa, Marie and Edna. Winners were: first, tablecloth, Ora Bruce, Belgrave; second, planter, Chantelle DenDekker, Brussels; third. $20 cash, Marjorie Broadfoot, Brucefield. A social time followed. slippery devils. But I am becoming really, really annoyed with the taxpayer dollars that are being blatantly spent on self promotion in this pre-election time. We need some strict legislation on what constitutes proper advertising to citizens and a strict limit on what can be spent by parties in any election year. I say, stop spending taxpayer money on such complete foolishness and call the damned election. Linda Easton, Goderich. --------------------------\ Is the party finally over?
