AAA Midget Hawks take Steel City Cup
The Huron Hawks AAA Midget
summer hockey team recently
claimed the championship at the
Steel City Cup, in Hamilton, May
23-25. The team defeated the host
Hamilton Tigers in a dramatic
shootout to win the tournament
final.
The Hawks jumped out to a 3-0
lead in the first period. Scoring goals
were Joel Hemingway with two and
Justin Kreller with one. Assists went
to Jimmy Gartshore, Mark Stirling,
and Alex Kreller.
The Tigers were then able to take
advantage of their exhausted
opponents and slowly claw their way
back into the game. They scored to
make it 3-3 with less than five
minutes to go in the third period. Ten
minutes of overtime solved nothing,
so the game had to be decided by a
shootout. Stirling, Hemingway, and
Dave Verbeme all scored on their
attempts, while goaltender Matt
Rehorst stopped all three shots he
faced to win the game.
Rehorst received the
championship game MVP and all
players received a championship
trophy in an awards ceremony after
the game.
The team reached the finals by
defeating the Timmons Bandits 3-0.
Kurt Edwards earned the shutout in
goal and picked up the game MVP.
Hemingway scored two goals and an
assist, with Stirling getting a goal
and two assists, and A. Kreller
receiving one assist.
The Hawks finished the round
robin portion of the tournament in
fourth place with a record of three
wins and two losses. The scores in
round robin were a 3-1 win over
Hamilton, a 3-2 loss to Detroit Belle
Tire, a 3-1 loss to Timmons, a 6-2
win over the Midwest Mustangs, and
a 3-1 win over the Rochester
Americans.
Receiving game MVPs were
Rehorst, Edwards, Hemingway,
Stirling, and James Gartshore with
two. Goalscorers in round robin
were Gartshore with seven, Stirling
with three, Derek Skinner with one,
Verberne with one, Stu McIntosh
with one, Nathan Clayton with one,
and Jeff Rowe with one. Picking up
assists were Skinner with three, J.
Kreller with three, Stirling with
three, Clayton with three,
Hemingway with two, Verbeme with
two, A. Kreller with one, and Jeff
Hall with one.
The tournament roster for the
Hawks included, Matt Rehorst of
Teeswater, Kurt Edwards of Ripley,
Joel Hemingway of Brussels, Stu
McIntosh of Clifford, Jeff Rowe of
Goderich, Jeff Hall of Plattsville,
Greg McGrath of Egmondville,

Clayton of Kitchener, Mark Stirling
of Petersburg, Justin Kreller of
Mildmay, Dave Verberne of

Coaching the team were Jamie
Thomas of Brussels, and George
Carter of Lucknow.
The team’s spring record now sits
at nine wins, five losses, and one tie.
They finished fifth out of 14 teams at
the Bluewater Sharks Tournament in
Sarnia, April 25-27.
The Hawks were sponsored for the
tournament by Rehorst Farms.
The Hawks’ final tournament of
the season is May 23-25 where they
will compete against teams from
London, Sudbury, Calgary, and
Toronto.

Athletes do well at OFSSA
Area secondary school athletes
brought home numerous awards
recently when they attended the
OFSSA (Ontario Federation of
Secondary School Athletics)
regional track meeting held in
Goderich, May 13 and 14.
Jenna Taylor, a Central Huron
Secondary School (CHSS) student,
earned first in the junior shot put
with a put of 9.25 metres; third,
junior discus, 23.68m and first,
junior javelin, 33m.
Jamie Lewis of CHSS brought
home a first in the senior girls 100-
metre dash in a time of 12.6 seconds;
first, senior 200-m, 26.5s and first,
senior long jump, 5.06m.
Kerissa VanAmersfoort from F. E.
Madill Secondary School placed
first in the midget shot put, 7.93m.;
second, midget discus, 28.63m and
second, midget javelin, 21.3m.
Kerri Meier, a Madill student
earned fourth in the junior 100-meter
dash in a time of 13.3 seconds and
second, 200-metre dash, 28s.
Nicole Meier took fifth in the
junior 400-metre dash.
Laura Meier from Madill finished
fourth in the senior 400-metre
hurdles in a time of 1:16.6 second
and first senior triple jump, 9.69m.
Kristen Gerth of Madill earned
first in the senior shot put with a put
of 10.49 metres and first, senior
discus, 31.4m.
Kelsie Alton of Madill captured
fourth in the midget 100-metre dash
in a time of 14.1 seconds; second,
midget 200-m dash, 29.1s and first,
midget 400-m dash, 1:07.1s.
Madill student Rachel Bell earned
fifth in the midget 80-metre hurdles
with a time of 18.7 seconds.
In the junior 80-metre hurdles,
Madill classmates Meagan Campbell
and Amy Cook took first and second
with times of 13.2 seconds and 13.4
seconds, respectively.
Cook also earned first in the
junior long jump with a distance of
4.51 metres.
Campbell also placed first in the
junior high jump topping 1.45
metres and first, jtmior triple jump,
10.46 metres.
Ashley Warwick of Madill
captured second in the junior high
jump with a leap of 1.45 metres
(judge’s determination).
Ashley Gaunt of Madill place first
in the junior discus with a toss of
25.58 metres and fifth, junior shot
put. 8.1 lm.
Madill student Amanda Palmer
took second in the senior 100-metre
dash in a time of 13.4 seconds; first,
senior 100-metre hurdles, 16.8s and
third, senior long jump, 4.53m.
Emily Elston of Madill finished
fifth in the senior 100-metre dash in
a time of 14.7 seconds.
The Madill junior girls 4x 100-
metre relay earned second, 53.9s, the
senior girls 4x 100-metre relay
placed first, 53.6s, and the open
4x400-metre relay team took first in
a time of 4:30.2.
The squad from St. Anne’s
Catholic Secondary School placed
fourth in the girls’ open 4x400-metre
relay with a time of 4:58.9.
In the boys’ divisions, Madill’s
senior 4x 100-metre relay team
placed first with a time of 47.4s;
open 4x400-metre relay team, first,
3:55.3; Goderich District Collegiate
Institute’s junior boys 4x 100-metre
relay team took first in a time of
48.9s and the St. Anne’s boys open
4x400-metre relay finished fifth.
Deric Kruse and Craig Folkard
from Madill placed second and third
respectively in the 100-metre dash
ambulatory event with times of 13.3
and 13.4 seconds.

Minister speaks
on Ghana
Members of the Cranbrook
Presbyterian Church attended the
Monkton WMS Thankoffering and
dinner on Sunday, May 18. The guest
speaker was their minister, Theresa
McDonald Lee who told about her
study leave in Ghana.

Huron East Women’s Institute annual
meeting in Gorrie on May 13.
