U-lls start with loss
It was not the way the Brussels U-
11 squad wanted to start the new
soccer season, allowing six goals
over the line and having their
offence stymied. However, that’s
what happened when Newton 1
visited May 13.
Christine Bone began in net for
the home team and quickly
witnessed the offensive ability of
the opponent. After a stop by
defensive player Emily Prior,
Newton scored.
Randy Zwep showed off his
footwork along the sidelines and
Kristen Grobbink and Kasey King
did their best to clear the ball from
the Brussels end.
With play continuously in the
Brussels end. Bone stopped several
shots in close with Newton scoring
three before the end of the half.
Chris Becker made attempts to clear
the ball while on the ground in the
crease and Gavin Bowers’s speed
helped him get back to assist the
defence.
Vicky Blake worked the ball up
the sides and Zwep and Natalie
White made a nice rush to the
opponent’s end only to be stopped
before a good shot could be fired.
Adrian Menzi also worked hard
downfield, but his attack was pushed

Cameron Schlosser took over in
net for the second half and the
Brussels offence showed some
spirit, continuing to try to push the
attackers out of the zone.
Grobbink made some nice moves
at midfield to clea'- the play before
Zwep and Avaleigh Nonkes’s try
was grabbed by the Newton
netminder.
Cassidy Peachy and Brittany
Thyssen aided Schlosser with strong
defensive plays.
Brussels finally broke through the
strong Newton line when Bowers
raced down the sidelines and made a
great pass to Prior for the goal.
Newton regained their four-goal
lead when a shooter picked up a
rebound and put it past Schlosser
and into the net.
The visitors topped off the scoring
with a goal late in the half for the 6-
1 win.
Working hard to keep Brussels in
the game were Matthew Cardiff,
Kabrina Bishop, Melissa Dale,
Morgan Deitner, Breanne den
