service
at Duffs
United
Friends, family and members of
Duff’s United Church were greeted
by Murray and Olene Dennis on this
confirmation Sunday. The theme of
blooming, flourishing and growing
in faith was observed throughout the
service.
The call to worship was read by
Andrew McDonald.
The opening prayer was by Justin
Biesinger and was followed by the
confirmation of five young people
of Walton.
The scripture reading was done by
Andrew and the reflection was
presented by Laura and Elise and
they talked about how we plant
seeds in hope that they will grow
and how seeds of hope are planted
within us that will grow in our faith
journey through life.
The presentation of the offering
was by Elise Ringgenberg and The
prayer of dedication by Adam
McClure. Laura Black led the
prayers of the people.
There were many family members
on hand to witness the profession of
faith of the confirmands and many
were guests at their homes following
Sunday’s service. Congratulations to
these five young people of Walton
for their commitment to the
confirmation program and their
mentors.
The confirmation class and their
families and mentors gathered at
Walton church on Thursday evening
to enjoy a potluck supper and finish
their confirmation class with the
presentation of their outreach
projects.
They explained how they had
carried out part of their faith
statements with their members.
Andrew with mentor, Marilyn
McDonald, helped at the Wingham
Food Bank.
Justin with mentor, Neil McGavin,
volunteered to help those in need
with raking, etc. and any donations
they received were given to the
mission and service fund.
Laura and mentor, Marie
McGavin, helped at a men’s hostel
by cleaning.
Adam and mentor, Iqn Wilbee,
also did outside work for members
of the community and Elise and
mentor, Shelley McGavin, did the
artwork and backdrops for Shirley
McCall’s variety show for MS. All
the confirmands received their
certificates and Bibles.

Appreciation extended
to Grey farm day committee
Thursday, all of the Grey Central
students had the opportunity to
attend Farm Safety day with their
peers from East Wawanosh and
Brussels Public School.
Accompanied by their teachers and
many parent volunteers, the students
learned about many aspects of farm
safety from over 30 presenters.
The school council thanks Dianne
Diehl and the committee for all their
hard work. They also wish to convey
appreciation to those who donated or
contributed in other ways to this
event.
School council held a meeting on
Monday, April 28, reports Secretary
Lori Martin. Grey’s trustee, Colleen
Schenk, was present and clarified
the implications of new boundary
changes for trustee electoral areas.
Grey Twp. is now in the electoral
district of Huron East. As a result,
Schenk will no longer be able to
serve as trustee for Brussels Public
School or Grey Central School after
the November election. She
expressed her disappointment, and
likewise school council expressed
appreciation for all of her past and
ongoing support.
Silver Birch and Red Maple
reading programs are ongoing at this
time. The school council regretted
being unable to commit to funds
now, but will re-evaluate at the end
of the school year. The council
recommended considering this
excellent program for funding in the
new fall budget.
There will be a public meeting on
May 12 to discuss potential border
changes that may affect Grey
Central. The meeting will be held in
Seaforth at the AMDSB Education
Centre at 7 p.m. Information was
sent to parents affected.
Grey Central will have 13 full-
time equivalent teachers next year.
Staffing details are not yet known.
This week in Mrs. Smith’s
kindergarten class, they learned a
rhyme about rain and sang a song
called Green and Speckled Frogs.
They are starting a program called
Second Step which helps children
understand and express their
feelings.
Mrs. Bowler’s kindergarten class
is preparing for Mother’s Day by
crafting special gifts.
Mrs. Goodall’s Grade Is planted
sunflower seeds. In math, they are
learning about money and learning
how to subtract. They finished their
Canada projects.
Miss Hill’s Grade 1/2 class is
doing symmetry. They are also
learning about different types of
energy including light, motion,
sound and heat.
In Mr. Park’s Grade 2/3 class, they
are working on word endings and
are studying spring flowers.
Mrs. Taylor’s Grade 3/4 class has
been doing decimals in math. They
are learning how to write in French.
In science they are doing sound.
They went swimming twice this
week.
Miss Aarssen’s Grade 4/5s made
math games and the Grade 5s
presented them. They finished
making newspapers on their life and
started drama activities.
Mr. Walker’s Grade 5s are
learning about weather in science
and government in social studies.
The Grade 5s and 6s are doing
motion geometry, studying flips,
slides and turns in math.
Miss Henry’s Grade 7s finished
presenting their French project as
well as their scary stories in drama.
They started patterns and sequences
in math. In language they are writing
about what they would do if they had
more confidence. They also got the
outline for a geography project in
which they will be researching a
society or type of people, such as
Australian Aboriginies.
Miss VanBoulis’s morning class
has focussed on Holland while
learning about the countries of the
world. They tried on wooden shoes,
ate red cabbage, talked about the
Czech Republic, ate dumplings,
discussed Canada and felt buffalo
fur and seal skin. They are also
doing division in math.
The afternoon class is studying
Canada; specifically the six different
regions. In math,, they are lear
ning about geometry and co-
ordinants.
PEOPLE AROUND
WALTON
The Walton area was again
blessed by the birth of another little
girl. Dan and Lynn McNichol
welcomed pretty-in-pink Madison
Lynn into their lives.
Congratulations to them.
Neil and Marie McGavin headed
to Ottawa Wednesday morning to
attend the visitation for an Ontario
Plowman’s Association friend’s
mother. They had a brief visit with
them and returned to Markham late
Wednesday evening. They were
guests of Marilyn Oliver and
enjoyed a visit with her as well.
Thursday they arranged a visit
with Ian, who is Neil’s first cousin
and Pat Matheson. They had lunch
with them and enjoyed pizza on the
nouveau-style placemat settings.
They shared a few laughs and
stories, before Neil and Marie were
on their way home to Walton to
attend the confirmation potluck
dinner.
Good news to hear Clarence Flood
has been released from hospital and
is home. He is still recovering but
feels much better. We wish him well
on his recovery.
Home from Vancouver, B.C. is Dr.
Neil McDonald to visit mother
Leona and other family members.
He will be around a couple of weeks
to catch up with old friends and do a
little work.

Kelso’s son, Hayden’s fourth
birthday. They also celebrated
Shayna Melady’s first communion
which was to take place on Sunday.
Many of the McGavin family
attended both the party and the
Sunday communion service.
Many of the university and
college students have returned home
for the summer. We now have both
LeeAnn and Kelly back in our home
and it’s a much nosier household
again.
Other students home include Tina
McClure, Erin Rock, Chris Blake,
and Ken McCallum. I hope to catch
up with others /on what they are
doing as 1 see them.
There were lots of
Brussels/Walton-area people away
on Sunday to see The Lion King at
the Princess of Wales Theatre in
Toronto.
LeeAnn, Kelly, Mary Bernard and
myself went by car to Yorkdale Mall
and got on the subway to get to the
theatre. From our balcony-view
seats we could see Gary, Lori and
Tara Pipe and girls, Jeff and
Shannon McGavin and family,
Elaine, Kevin, Darlene Nichol and
girls, Rhonda Hoegy and daughter
Susan Nichol, Barb McLellan and
girls and Jackie Bishop and girls.
On Saturday at Walton Hall it was
the chinchilla show and auction for
the Georgian Bay Chinchilla Club
and 4-H Chinchilla Club. There
were numerous animals auctioned
by Walton’s Jim Campbell and a
good day was enjoyed by all.
