Ben Miller of the Auburn Lions Club was recen’ly elected vice- governor of District 89. a region which covers Mitchell to Lion’s Head and east to Orangeville. Miller has been a member of the Auburn club for approximately 10 years, but has been a Lion since 1988. When he moved to the Nile area several years ago following his retirement, Miller said he was contemplating either joining the Goderich or Lucknow clubs. However, after having coffee in Auburn one day and being invited to a meeting, he decided Auburn was the place. “I met a nice bunch of guys.” he said. “I enjoy the Lions. It makes one feel good if you can help others less fortunate.” Miller told of many projects which Lions from across Canada are involved such as Camp Dorsel which is a “camp” for dialysis patients so that they can stop over for treatment while travelling through the area, allowing them more freedom to take vacations. “It is the only one of its kind in the world,” he said. Club members also help with the CN1B camp. The local clubs have pledged more than $3 million to the Healing Gardens at London Health Sciences Centre Hospital for Sick Children. This is above and beyond the regular donation already given to that hospital as well as Alexandra Marine and General, Clinton Public and Wingham and District Hospitals. Local families in need of eyeglasses can be helped and health BEN MILLER A FIRST IN AUBURN LIONS CLUB HISTORY care aids such as wheelchairs and crutches are available. The Lions also support the guide dog program. As the vice-governor. Miller will act as a liaison for the 45 district clubs and 1,250 members. Noting the time and commitment needed for such a position. Miller said his wife Joan attends many events with him and gives her full support to his endeavours. These include attending a leadership training session in Portland, Oregon in September as well as club anniversaries and conventions throughout the year ahead. The support of the local club has also helped Miller advance, he added Prior to his election to the vice- governor’s position. Miller has been the Auburn club president twice, zone chair and is regional chair this year. He assumes his new position at the end of June and hopes to move into the governor’s role next year.
