Cty. budgets $45,000 for
hazardous waste disposal
By Keith Roulston
Citizen publisher
Huron County has budgeted
$45,000 to set up collection days to
allow people to get rid of their
household hazardous wastes.
But some councillors at the Feb. 6
meeting of county council, were not
happy with the county being
involved or that the county’s waste
management consultant would help
with the planning.
“It’s the first time the county is
engaging in some sort of waste
management service,” pointed out
Scott Tousaw, senior planner.
Previously the county had only been
involved to facilitate co-operations
between local municipalities.
“Why do we need the county
(involved)?” wondered Rob Morley,
South Huron councillor. “I’m fully
supportive of having collection days
but we might be starting something
(by having the county involved). I’m
not sure we need a consultant to tell
us all this stuff.”
Tousaw said consultant Steve
Janes would help put together a
“request for proposals” to see who
would be interested in running the
collection days.
But Morley was opposed to both
the county’s and Janes’s
steer consigned by Glen Restemayer,
Dashwood, weighed 1,410 lbs.
selling to Aylmer Meat Packers for
$115.50. His overall offering of six
steers averaged 1,442 lbs. for an
average price of $108.49. Phares
Kraemer, Paisley, consigned nine
steers averaging 1,538 lbs. which
sold for an average of $107.86 with
his top two limousin steer averaging
1,490 lbs. selling to Holly Park Meat
Packers for $119.25.
Ten steers consigned by Charles
Ready, St. Marys, averaged 1,428
lbs. selling for an average price of
$106.21 with his top limousin steer
weighing 1,375 lbs. selling to
Dominion Meats for $118.50. Doug
Lightfoot, Crediton, consigned two
steers averaging 1.545 lbs. selling
for an average of $105.60 with his
top red steer weighing 1,455 lbs.
selling to Holly Park Meat Packers
for $115. One limousin steer
consigned by Jim Howatt,
Londesboro, weighed 1,475 lbs.
selling to Norwich Packers for
$115.50. His overall offering of
eleven steers averaged 1,574 lbs.
selling for an average price of
$105.34.
There were 352 heifers on offer
selling from $106 to $110 with sales
to $120.50. Jack Lehrbrass,
Alvinston, consigned one limousin
heifer weighing 1,326 lbs. selling to
Norwich Packers for $120.50. His

heifers averaged 1,304 lbs. for an

heifer consigned by Jim Dixon,
Lucan, weighed 1,255 lbs. selling to
Highland packers Ltd. for $120. His
overall offering of twenty-six heifers
averaged 1,329 lbs. selling for an
average of $110.59.
Gordon Borth, Mildmay,
consigned one red wf heifer
involvement. “Once we start having
our consultant hire people we’re in
the business,” he argued.
Huron East Councillor Lin Steffler
agreed with Morley. “There are far
too many engineers and consultants
getting too much money,” she
complained.
Morley noted that municipalities
used to run their own hazardous
waste days but Deb Shewfelt,
Goderich councillor, noted that for a
number of years the municipalities
haven’t been doing anything. “I’m
told people are burying it (hazardous
waste) in their garbage and it’s going
in the landfills,” he said.
Tousaw agreed the municipalities
had backed away from the
household hazardous waste days
because of the cost. The county has
been getting calls from people
asking what they’re supposed to do
with such things as old paint and
household chemicals, he said. When
told there are no pick-up days some
people will store the cans and jugs
away but others, particularly those
who are moving and must have a
solution, may be putting it in with
their waste to be landfilled, he
warned.
There could be a stiff price for
municipalities if these chemicals
were to get into the water-table and

limousin heifers consigned by

Bearinger, Mount Forest, consigned
twenty-nine heifers averaging 1,443
lbs. selling for an average of $106.09
with his top gold heifer weighing
1,325 lbs. selling to Holly Park Meat
Packers for $115.75.
There were 391 cows on offer. D1
and D2 cows sold $54 to $64 with
sales to $78.50; D3, $50 to $54; D4,
$40 to $50. One holstein cow
consigned by Bill VanNes, Ethel,
weighed 1,240 lbs. selling to Aylmer
Meat Packers for $78.50. His overall
offering of four holstein cows
averaged 1,309 lbs. for an average
price of $57.76*. Jerome Zettler,
Walkerton, consigned one gold cow
show up in monitoring wells around
landfill sites. “If it showed’up in
monitoring wells the cost would
make this cost (of hazardous waste
days) look small,” he said.
Council did agree for the proposal
to go ahead. Because of timing only
one hazardous waste day will be
held in each area this year. In 2004
two days will be planned.
4-H club meets
