Natural Environment Policies WOAA champs The Wingham McFadden Maytag Juveniles captured the WOAA championship on Saturday with a win over Wiarton. (Advance-Times photo) Wingham Juvies take C title The Wingham McFadden’s Maytag Juveniles clinched the WOAA C Division title this past Saturday by defeating Wiarton to take the series three games to zero. On Friday night the team travelled to Wiarton for game two. Trailing 1- 0 in the first period Greg Machan tied the score for Wingham help from Aaron Seip and Bruce. Wingham went on to score unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead. Scoring for Wingham were Pat Rozendale, Ken McCracken and Chad Cook. Assists were earned by Cook, Garrett Knight and Kent McPherson. with Jake three Wiarton would make it 4-3 before Bruce gave Wingham a 5-3 lead with just over 12 minutes left in the third period. Seip earned an assist on the goal. Wiarton would tie the score at five to send the game into overtime. Just 31 seconds into the extra frame Cook scored the winner with help from McPherson. With a 2-0 series lead Wingham hosted Wiarton on Saturday afternoon with hopes of capturing the WOAA championship. Wingham got the first two goals when Machan and McPherson scored before the first period was half over. Bruce, Seip and Rod Wingham McPherson with to Cook were and PeeWees top Hensail As the Brussels PeeWees continue in the central division playoffs, they met Hensall, Feb. 22. Brussels hit first, when Zach Hoegy got the puck to Taylor Prior near the end of the first frame. After watching their opponent even the tally, Brussels’ Hoegy responded, taking a pass from Prior and Brian Burgess for the netter. The squad blew it open in the third, hitting the twine for four while Blyth Novices take on Drayton in next round holding Hensall to just one additional score. Prior tallied three with the help of Hoegy (three) and Burgess (two) before Westin McLeod topped off the attack with a single. Other assists went to Jason Bowman and Dan Dwyer. Coach Merle Hoegy said the team showed excellent team work in the 6-2 win. MacEwan earned assists. Wiarton cut the lead in half but Rozendale regained the two-goal lead with an unassisted marker. Wiarton would make it 3-2 before the end of the period. In the second Wingham scored two more goals to Wiarton’s one to take a 5-3 lead into the intermission. Scoring for Rozendale and assists going Rozendale. Wingham scored two more goals to take a convincing 7-3 lead late in the game. Shawn Henry scored a coast-to-coast beauty and Chad Cook scored as well with help from Rozendale and McPherson. Wiarton would not lay down and die though, as they made it 7-5 with two and a half minutes to go. They poured on the pressure and had many chances to score in the last few minutes but Seip scored an empty netter with help from Kevin Hopf to secure an 8-5 Wingham win and the WOAA championship. Wingham will now Ennismore (15 minutes north of Peterborough) in the OMHA semi­ finals. The Blyth Novices swept their best-of-five series against Elma Logan to move onto the next round of playoffs. Elma Logan came to Blyth, Feb. 13, looking to earn a win. However, the Blyth defence prevented a single goal by the opponents. A first-period netter by Johnathon Atkinson turned ou to be the game winner though Connor Prescott added some security in the third with a goal of his own. Prescott assisted on the first score while Cody Richmond had a hand in both. Blyth will now challenge Drayton.
