Brussels Bantams advance to
OMHA semi-final, meet Belmont
The Brussels Bantams were
geared up for the third game in the
WOAA final against Tara Feb. 18.
Though the match was packed
with penalties, seven for Brussels
and 10 for Tara, Brussels’ offence
was strong, taking command in the
first and never relinquishing.
Brad McKague opened the scoring
with the help of Christopher Jutzi
and Greg Bowers. Jutzi put Brussels
up by two with the assistance of
Bowers and McKague before Tara
got on the board.
However, that would be the only
shot to beat the Brussels netminder
as the home team went on to score
seven more for the 9-1 victory.
Scorers were Matt McClinchey
(three), Matt White (two), Jutzi and
Adam McClure. Mitch Blake,
McClinchey (three), Cory Chapman,
Chase Chapman, Jutzi and White all
earned assists.
Brussels travelled to Tara Feb. 23
trying to take the series in four
games and met with much more
difficult competition.
Tara struck first, putting two past
the goalie in the first frame.
Brussels was down 3-0 before
tallying a goal midway through the
second off the stick of McKague
with help from Bowers.
The retter brought the team to life
as they drew to within one before the
end of the period when McKague
got the puck to Jutzi for the score.
The attack continued in the third
and a late-period goal by Jutzi
brought the teams even. McClure
and Bowers assisted on the play.
With the game forced into
overtime, White picked up a pass
from Blake at 9:46 and beat the Tara
netminder.
The comeback win gives the
Bantams the WOAA championship
and moves them onto the OMHA
semi-final play against Belmont.
The fiTSt game will be Feb. 28 in
Belmont with the team returning to
home ice March 2 for an 8:30 p.m.
match.
Clinton nips Bly th Tykes
The Blyth Tykes have played well
in three games earlier this month,
earning a win and a tie as well a very
close loss to a tough Clinton team.
On Feb. 1, they met the top team
when Clinton visited.
In spite of being down by two
early in the second, the team fought
back, drawing even after netters
from Michael Van Wyk and Spencer
Stevenson.
Clinton recaptured the lead
minutes later when they scored their
third and game-winning goal.
The following week, Seaforth
came to town for another close
match.
Blyth started the scoring early in
the game when Alex Peters picked
up a pass from Dalton Richmond for
the goal.
The teams traded goals, ending the
game in a 3-3 tie.
Scorers for Blyth were Peters with
his second and Matthew Van Wyk.
Assists went to Wesley Thompson,
Stevenson and Heidi Raynard.
On Feb. 15, Blyth travelled to
Bayfield.
Peters had an exeptionally strong
game, scoring four of his team’s six
goals. Chloe Middegaal and
Stevenson racked up singles.
Michael Van Wyk was steady in
net, allowing just two goals from the
home team.
The added team effort by Laura
Higgins, Kennan MacDonald,
Caroline McDowell, Ryan Nesbitt,
Janette Plaetzer, and Braydon
Whitfield helped win the game.
