He has appeared on some of the largest concert stages such as Toronto’s CNE Grandstand, Ontario Place, Big Country Jamboree at Crave, Saskatchewan, as well as tours of Europe, performances on Nashville’s Grand Ole Oprey and a Regent Cruise in the Caribbean. Heavily involved with his own record label, a publishing house and a company specializing in the mak­ ing of custom jingles for radio and television, with a definite measure of success. He was part of the team recog­ nized for their contribution to music by winning seven Juno Awards, numerous Big Country Awards and the prestigious C.F. Martin Lifetime Achievement Award. Mercey has performed on count­ less television shows such as the Don Messer Show, Tommy Hunter Show, Ronnie Prophet Show, The Dini Petty Show, The Tommy Banks Show, Canada AM and many others to numerous to mention. For the last few years, as well as limited performances as an artist, Mercey has been a motorcoach tour director for Hanover Holiday Tours, journeying often to Nashville, Tennessee, Branson, Missouri, Cape Cod and many other destina­ tions. He has also been a proof consult­ ant for Institutional Promotions of Canada, a company which produces Church Pictorial Directories. Scouts, Guides celebrate this week Artistic experience The board of directors of the Wingham Town Hall Heritage Theatre in Wingham announced the appointment of Larry Mercey as general manager/artistic director. He brings extensive knowledge of the music business to the theatre, having spent over 40 years as an international performing artist and music publisher as president of Mercey Brothers Limited. He was with the award-winning Mercey Brothers and started his career in the music business as a regular on the CKNX Barn Dance as well as on CKNX TV. (Photo submit­ ted) As general manager/artistic direc­ tor of the Wingham Town Hall Heritage Theatre, Larry Mercey is looking forward to a new challenge of bringing a variety of entertain­ ment to the area for the enjoyment of the patrons of the theatre. The reputation of Larry Mercey in the Canadian Music Industry, after over four decades in the business is such that a long list of credits is not essential. Since starting his solo career in early 1990, Mercey has seen a num­ ber of successes come his way. He has enjoyed several top ten hits from his first solo CD effort, Full Speed Ahead, a #1 pick, ‘Album of the Year according to Country Music News, including a couple of number ones. He has received numerous Juno Nominations for country male vocal­ ist and Canadian Country Association Nominations for coun­ try male vocalist of the year. Mercey started his career on the CKNX Barn Dance broadcasting from Wingham. He then formed the group The Mercey Brothers who have now had the honour of being inducted into The Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame. As a lead singer in this famed group, Mercey has recorded 17 albums, (including a Gold Album) and some 50 singles, most of them reaching the # 1 spot on It’s a time of celebration for Scouts and Guides across Canada. Feb. 16- 23 is Scout-Guide week, when both organizations join together in the spirit of camaraderie and friendship to mark the joint birthday of their founder and his wife; Lord Robert and Lady Olave Baden-Powell. Feb. 22 is the birthday of Baden- Powell, who in 1907 started the world’s leading youth organization in Brownsea, England. His wife, Olave, was appointed World Chief Guide in 1930. Since those early days, the movement has grown worldwide to include 216 countries and territories. Across Canada, celebrations will include camps, expeditions and mall displays, special banquets and parades, as well as recognition events. In keeping with long-stand­ ing tradition, many members will be seen proudly sporting their uniforms to school and to work. In his first Scout-Guide week mes­ sage since being appointed National Commissioner of Scouts Canada in November 2002, Mike Scott said: “This week is an opportunity for the public to recognize the huge poten­ tial of Canadian youth and the work that Scouting does in developing our country’s future leaders. We also rec­ ognize the efforts of the many volun­ teers who selflessly provide count­ less hours to help our youth meet the challenges of life.
