Catholic school board no longer in fantasy lottery By Stew Slater Special to The Citizen The Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board will no longer partici pate in a London-based, region-wide prize draw in order to raise money for such things as music program ming and extra classroom resources. At a regular meeting Monday, Jan. 27, trustees voted unanimously to withdraw the board from its partner ship with the Monsignor Feeney Foundation’s annual Fantasy Lottery. For the past several years, the board has sold tickets on the draw, which originated within London as a means of raising Catholic education funds over and above those provid ed by the provincial government. When surrounding boards joined up. funds raised in the draw were even tually distributed to participants based on their student population. Prior to the Jan. 27 vote, board chair Bernard Murray noted that, though the partnership had been valuable, the “trend” seems to indi cate that the lottery is not as popular as it once was. The amount of money received by the board has dwindled, he explained. “If you look at what was made from the previous years, and where it looks to be going, (the amount raised) was starting to go down,” Murray said, in a subsequent inter view. The St. Marys-area trustee noted that organizations operating various similar prize draws have, in recent years, opted for higher-valued prize packages and higher prices in an effort to continue selling tickets. Though he stressed the board’s deci sion represented an amiable parting of ways, he did suggest there was a lack of consensus among those involved with the Fantasy Lottery about how to approach this “big business” trend in fundraising. Both Murray and past chair Mike Miller expressed appreciation to those within Huron and Perth who supported the board’s participation in the lottery, both through purchas ing tickets and through working with the school board to operate the event. The loss of the fundraising source leaves the board without a signifi cant means through which to cover the costs of those things not accounted for by the provincial gov ernment’s funding formula. This contrasts with the Avon Maitland District School Board, which has an arms-length relationship with the charitable Foundation for the Enrichment of Education, Huron- Perth.
