Agriculture Brussels Livestock report American-style fed steers,heifers up $l-$2 Total receipts for Brussels Livestock for the week ending Feb. 14 were 2,479 head of cattle, 146 lambs and goats. On Tuesday the American-type fed steers and heifers sold at prices $1 to $2 higher while the balance sold on a steady trade. The cows sold easier than last week. The veal sold on an easier market while the lambs traded at prices steady to last week. On Friday all weights and classes of Stockers sold on a good, strong, active trade. There were 659 steers on offer selling from $ 110 to $ 114 with sales to $ 136. Osiah Weber, Mount Forest, consigned one blue steer weighing 1,360 lbs. which sold to Dominion Meats for $136. His overall offering of fourteen steers averaged 1,406 lbs. for an average price of $116.83. Bill Kerslake, Staffa, consigned one limousin steer weighing 1,350 lbs. which sold to Norwich Packers for $130. His overall offering of forty steers averaged 1,401 lbs. selling for an average of $118.46. Three limousin steers consigned by Al Renning, Exeter, averaged 1,450 lbs. selling to Norwich Packers for $127.75. His overall offering of twenty-nine steers averaged 1,438 lbs. for an average of $118.23. Ross Baird, Wingham, consigned one red wf steer weighing 1,410 lbs. which sold 'to Norwich Packers for $123.50. According to Dowson, American farmers can use chemicals that Ontario farmers can’t. “Some products do the same job. They’re approved there but we can’t use them here.” He added the farmers needed an even playing field for the price of commodities. For some farmers, Dowson said the NMA will create blocks of land that are useless to them. He added farms that are close to creeks or residencies will have nutrient spreading setbacks. On the other hand, Dowson said homeowners are allowed to fertilize their entire lawns and have weeping beds right to the edge of their properly. MP Steckle to chair agri-food committee Paul Steckle, Member of Parliament for Huron-Bruce, was named Feb. 4 to the post of chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri­ food. The all-party committee is responsible to review legislation brought forward that directly pertains to the agriculture and agri­ food industry. The committee would also routinely consult with stakeholders in an attempt to properly advise government on the state of the industry. “I am especially pleased to have been named chair given the tremendous role that agriculture plays in Huron-Bruce. We are one of the most substantial agricultural producing regions in Canada and, as a farmer myself, I am eager to get started on the tasks ahead.
