Prov. Liberal leader McGuinty
asks for input from farmers
Continued from page 1
The Liberal leader asked farmers
what regulations American farmers
had to follow and what advantages
they have.
According to Dowson, American
farmers can use chemicals
that Ontario farmers can’t.
“Some products do the same job.
They’re approved there but we
can’t use them here.” He added
the farmers needed an even
playing field for the price of
commodities.
For some farmers, Dowson said
the NMA will create blocks of land
that are useless to them. He added
farms that are close to creeks or
residencies will have nutrient
spreading setbacks.
On the other hand, Dowson said
homeowners are allowed to fertilize
their entire lawns and have weeping
beds right to the edge of their
properly.

MP Steckle to chair
agri-food committee
Paul Steckle, Member of
Parliament for Huron-Bruce, was
named Feb. 4 to the post of chair of
the House of Commons Standing
Committee on Agriculture and Agri
food. The all-party committee is
responsible to review legislation
brought forward that directly
pertains to the agriculture and agri
food industry.
The committee would also
routinely consult with stakeholders
in an attempt to properly advise
government on the state of the
industry.
“I am especially pleased to have
been named chair given the
tremendous role that agriculture
plays in Huron-Bruce. We are one of
the most substantial agricultural
producing regions in Canada and, as
a farmer myself, I am eager to get
started on the tasks ahead.
