(vtcky Bremner photo) Ontario games begin Sunday at 2 p.m. This weekend will be the experience of a lifetime for Justin Peters of Blyth as he travels to New Brunswick as a member of the Team Ontario under-17 hockey squad. Peters is a goalie for the St. Mike’s Majors in the OHL. Team Ontario will compete in the Canada Winter Games being held from Feb. 23 to March 1, in Campbellton and Bathurst. Team Ontario begins round-robin Hurricanes in Members of the Huron Hurricane Aquatic Club competed in the Western Region short course B championship. Jan 31- Feb. 2. Jessica Sparling of Blyth swam in eight events for 12-year-olds, over a three-day period. Her placings were: seventh, 200- metre butterfly; 11th, 200m backstroke in a personal best time of 2:54:77; 15th, 800m freestyle; 16th, 100m backstroke with a personal best time of 1:24:22; 23rd, 200m freestyle; 27th, 400m freestyle; 30th, 100m freestyle and 31st, 50m play on Sunday at 2 p.m., against Manitoba. The other games will be Feb. 24, 7 p.m. against Nova Scotia; Feb. 25 versus Alberta at 7 p.m. and Feb. 27 against P.E.I, at 6 p.m. The semi-final games will be on Feb. 28 at noon and 3 p.m. with both the gold and bronze medal games, March 1 at 11 a.m. Check local listings for broadcast times. championship freestyle. Sixteen-year-old Meghan Morris, competing against swimmers to the age of 25, received a 16th in the 50m freestyle; 24th, 100m breaststroke; 27th, 200m freestyle with a personal best of 2:27:26 and 31st in the 200m individual medley It was all offence when the Blyth PeeWees took on Belmore Feb. 10, in the first game of group play. The home team struck first with John McDowell getting a natural hattrick and Mat Stevenson adding one before Belmore got on the board. Assists went to Curtis Robertson, Ken Plunkett, Stevenson and Derek Youngblut. Belmore tied the score at four midway through the second then went up by one before Blyth retook the lead when McDowell and Brussels Bantams tie series Brussels Bantams are tied one game to one against Tara in the best of five WOAA final series. It was a nailbiter when the squad met their opponents in an away game Feb. 11. With home ice advantage Tara struck first in the opening period, but Matt McClinchey tied it up in an unassisted effort in the dying seconds before the buzzer. Tara again took the lead midway through the second period, only to have Brussels tie it two minutes later. Brad McKague set up Matt White for the goal. Unfortunately, the hosts managed to strike yet again to take a one-point lead into the final Atom series deadlocked The Blyth Atom Bulldogs are deadlocked at one with Normanby. The first game was in Blyth, Feb. 13. The boys came out a little over­ confident, finding themselves down 2-0 after two periods. Michael McDowell shovelled home a loose puck, assisted by Tyler Black and Adam Cronin. Although Blyth applied pressure, . they couldn’t beat Normanby’s goaltender, and lost game one, 2-1. Grant Sparling played well in the Dogs’ net. Sunday, Feb. 16, Blyth travelled to Ayton for game two. Normanby scored early, but Blyth proved to be determined to win, led by the excellent play of Tolson Carter. Carter recorded a natural hattrick, with a coast-to-coast solo effort, a breakaway from McDowell and an empty netter to seal a Dog’s win. Sheldon Reid and Sparling shared the goaltending duties. Blyth continues the quest to a WOAA title, Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Ayton and return to the Dog pound Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Game five Robertson beat the netminder with the help of Stevenson and Plunkett on the first one and McDowell and Lee Watkins and the second. Up 6-5 going into the third, Blyth opened a commanding lead with four goals in under four minutes. The scorers were Youngblut, Watkins, Tony Bean and McDowell. Plunkett topped off Blyth’s effort with the eleventh of the game. Assists went to Robertson, Youngblut and McDowell. Belmore managed one more in the period. The visitors came out strong in this one. McKague, with helpers from White and McClinchey tied it just minutes after the period began. Not to be outdone, however, the hosts responded quickly scoring to take the lead yet again. Adam McClure, set up by Scott Phillips and Steven Ropp, knotted it once more. Then, just one minute later, McClinchey scored the go- ahead goal with assists going to White and Chase Chapman. Brussels held onto the lead to take the 5-4 win. Home ice didn’t prove lucky for Brussels Feb. 14 when they lost the will be Sunday at 6 p.m. in Ayton if necessary. Mites play The Blyth Mites travelled to Bayfield on Saturday, Feb. 15. The score of the game did not reflect the effort that was made by Bayfield. Blyth had a good game and played well with only one line and three players. Goals for Blyth were scored by Curtis Raynard with three and Ashley Higgins with one. First-time goalscorers were Ronny Vercruyssen and Hunter Dale. Assists were made by Connor Rodgers, Ryan Plunkett, Autumn Wightman, Dallas Coultes and Dylan Bromley. dying minute, but were defeated 11- 6. McKague scored the lone Brussels goal in the second period. Chapman picked up the assist. Dogs up by 2 The Blyth Midget Bulldogs travelled to Tiverton for game two of their WOAA final Sunday night. The Dogs got goals from Kirk Stewart, Micah Loder, Joel Riley and Darren Austin to pick up a 4-0 victory. Assists went to K. Stewart, two; Cole Stewart, Neil Salverda, Riley and Loder. Dogs’ goaltender Travis Shelton played a strong game to register the shutouts. Tiverton returns to Blyth on Monday, Feb. 17 for game three.
