It was a special day on Saturday as
family and friends of Anton and
Janny Passchier of Blyth gathered to
help them celebrate 50 years of
marriage.
On March 15, 1951, Anton made a
decision to come to Canada. As a
survivor of a work camp during
World War II, he felt Canada seemed
to be a country which offered new
opportunities.
Finding work as a farmhand in the
Hamilton area he kept up
correspondence with Janny Van Ryn.
On Feb. 10, 1953 the two were
married and he brought her back to
Canada for the “honeymoon” they
say they are still on.
They flew on a propeller plane for
an 18-hour trip to Montreal since
they couldn’t land in Toronto at that
time. From there it was a 12-hour
train ride to Hamilton, where they
began their new life in a new
country.
From 1952-1956 Anton worked at
Stelco Steel Co. then operated his
own landscaping business in
Hamilton until 1959.
That year they bought a farm near
Belgrave and moved there with their
four children, Mary, Gordon, Anna
and baby Jo-Ann. Three more
children were added to their family,
John and twins Anton and Bernice.
In 1964 they bought a farm two
miles north of Blyth and changed it
over from a horse to a dairy
operation.
In April 1967, the Passchiers
became Canadian citizens in April,
then celebrated the arrival of their
last child Trudy, bringing their
family to a grand total of eight.
Thinking of retirement in 1980 the
couple purchased a home in Blyth,
but it wasn’t until 1997 that they
fully retired and Anton gave up the
cattle.
The couple have many hobbies,
particularly spending time with
family and grandchildren. Anton
enjoys gardening, including to
contributing to his daughters’
gardens, following world current
events, and Hockey Night in
Canada. Janny’s interests are
reading, writing, sewing and
music.
Their golden anniversary party
was held at Trinity Anglican Church
in Blyth. Special guests included
Anna and Henry Buffinga of
Newfoundland and Jo-Ann and
Richard Pepneck and family from
Alberta.
Another highlight was the
presence of their eldest grandson and
fiancee who are getting married in
two weeks.
