The Lung Association, Huron-Perth is presenting the 2003 Stratford Garden Festival. March 6, 7. 8 and 9 at the Stratford Coliseum. The theme of this year’s show is A River Runs Through It. At the show, the use of lighting, unusual materials, water and gardens will create the sense of wandering by a stream. Proceeds from The Stratford Garden Festival will support The Lung Association's research commit ments and health education initia tives. Speakers will talk on a variety of garden topics and visitors can see the latest in garden ornamentation and the work of area landscapers. A continuous series of presenta tions will feature speakers such as: Ed Lawrence, gardening expert on CBC Radio’s Monday noon phone-in pro gram; Harry Jongerden, head garden er at the Stratford Festival; John Glorious song The Faith in Song concert held at Blyth Memorial Hall, Feb. 8 drew a full house as patrons enjoyed songs of faith from five acts. Local singers Deb Siertsema and Darlene VanderVeen along with guitarist Jim Parish and drummer Calvin Bakelaar (not pictured) were among the performers. The event was sponsored by the ABC (Auburn-Blyth-Clinton) Women’s Ministries from the evangelical chapels. The funds raised will help the ministry. There will be other daily features at the Stratford Garden Festival. K-W artist, Peter Etril Snyder, will be painting in his own garden space at the show. Snyder is well known for his pictures of Mennonite life. Another unique opportunity for vis itors to the Stratford Garden Festival will be offered by Blackcreek Technologies. Bring a photo of your garden and Blackcreek will scan it into their computers so that you can experiment with different plans and plant material in your garden. Thirteen uniquely designed garden spaces will provide ideas for every one. Every day of the Stratford Garden Festival will bring something special. On Thursday, March 6, at 5 p.m. there will be a special tribute to R. Thomas Orr to whom this year’s show is ded icated. Ninety years ago, Orr was instrumental in forcing the City forthcoming^ Marriage Council of Stratford to hold a referen dum to assess the support of its plan to allow the CPR to build a railway along the Avon River, right through the centre of Stratford. This was the beginning of a strong commitment to gardens and a park system that affects the life of Stratford/to this day. Friday evening, March 7 the lights will be turned down creating a place of romance with wine and beer tast ing, food sampling and buskers to entertain the visitors. All of this is included with admission. Saturday, March 8 the day will begin at 8:30 a.m. when Ed Lawrence will host a breakfast. Tickets for this event may be purchased in advance by calling 519-271-7500. For more information, visit www.stratfordgardenfestival.com or phone 519-271-7500.
