logged 1,000 hours of volunteer
service in the years since, sharing his
special gifts with nursing home
residents, with children and as a
fixture at parades. Rambo also
attended church regularly.
For his owner Jane Hoggart of the
Londesboro area, it has been an
emotional time, not just because of
the loss of a friend, but because the
beloved pooch was also her working
companion. “My granddaughter
asked if I was going to get another

Designation
not restricted
to buildings

Moyer points out that a heritage
designation does not pertain solely
to buildings nor does a certain age
have to have been attained.
Anything that is cultural and
historically significant can be
designated.
The committee will advise owners
and provide a network for the flow
of information, said Moyer.
Part of the task in securing the
designation is the pulling together of
information on the property and
outlining why it is historically
significant.
A formal request must then be
made to council, a venture which
would be undertaken by the
committee on the property owner’s
behalf if so desired.
For details on requirements for a
heritage designation, the
municipality may be contacted.
The committee plans to return to
council in February or March for
further input.

little time right now.”
Hoggart said Rambo was
experiencing many internal
problems which forced her to make
the decision to have him euthanised.
He was then taken home and buried
in his St. John scarf.
The therapy dog program has seen
rapid growth since it began. The
dogs bring comfort, joy and
companionship to members of the
community who are sick, lonely or

reside in long-term care facilities.
Studies have proven that there are
many therapeutic benefits from the
unconditional love shown by a dog.
Ann Brabender, program and
social service co-ordinator at
Huronlea and Huronview, county
homes for the aged agrees that
Rambo brought much enjoyment to
the residents. “They looked forward
to his visit every week. They could
just sit for the longest time and pet
him. He was a loveable dog.”
