Choose wedding party carefully
Now that you’ve announced your
engagement, it’s time to start
thinking about who will be in your
wedding party. This is a decision not
to take lightly — these people will
be standing up for you in front of
friends, family and possibly
members of the clergy.
According to
UltimateWedding.com, the first
Design one-of-a-kind gown
choices to make are your
bridesmaids and groomsmen. Think
about your closest friends and
family members. The people you
spend your time with and share your
special occasions with are the ones
you want to be with you on your
wedding day.
A general rule of thumb is to have
one attendant per 50 invited guests.
This number doesn’t have to be
exact — you could have as few as
two attendants or as many as 12
each!
When choosing the best man and
maid/matron of honour, select those
people who are most reliable
because they will have many
functions to perform. The best man
will be responsible for handing final
payments to the catering hall, DJ,
photographer and others. The maid
of honour will help the bride dress,
hold her train and plan the bridal
shower.
The groomsmen will act as ushers
to seat your guests. They should
arrive early to accommodate any
early birds.
It’s a good idea to ask people from
both sides of the family so that the
ushers know where the guests
should be seated — on the bride’s
side or the groom’s.
Those who are not in the wedding
party can perform other important
roles. You may need scripture verses
to be read, candle lighters, a soloist
or a pianist. Most people would be
honoured to help out.
It may be a good idea to have your
wedding party get to know each
other before your wedding arrives. If
everyone lives nearby, host a
“getting to know you” cocktail party
so everyone can mingle before the
big day. It will help to soothe nerves
and break the ice.
(MS) — Some brides have always
had an idea of how they would like
to look on their wedding day, while
others wait until they’ve received
their engagement ring before
browsing through the first of many
bridal magazines. No matter where
you fall in the spectrum, the
wedding gown is an important
decision that should be considered at
least one year before your wedding
date, partially because the gown has
the potential to dictate the tone and
scope of your wedding celebration.
Brides often search high and low
for the perfect gown, scouting bridal
boutiques and catalogs for the
ultimate look. While there are
literally hundreds of dresses in all
shapes, sizes and price ranges, for
some this search can become
overwhelming and it can be difficult
to find exactly the dress you have in
mind for your wedding. One option
a bride may consider is having her
gown custom-made.
You can save a considerable
amount of money if there is a
talented dressmaker in the family
who could make the gown for you
— an ultimate wedding gift,
according the experts at fabric.com.
Or, by consulting a local fabric store
or dry cleaner you can often receive
a referral for a reputable dressmaker
in your area.
There are many other benefits to
having a govvn custom-made besides
the cost. You can design the style,
choose the fabric and
embellishments for your gown and
really show off a one-of-a-kind look.
Also, you can marry themes of
several dresses seen in magazines.
Perhaps you prefer one dress but
would like to add sleeves or change
the train — anything is possible
when you’re calling the shots.
Because there are so many types
of fabrics, trims, buttons and lace to
choose from, it’s best to consult a
company where you can easily
browse for what you need all in one
location.
One site that offers many of these
items is www.fabric.com. They
specialize in providing quality
fabrics at wholesale prices to the

Many reception sites and catering facilities also feature a ceremony
space where you can conduct religious proceedings. This is a viable option
for couples from mixed religions or those who prefer not to get married in
a place of worship.
Another advantage is wedding guests only need travel to one location,
and the party can begin immediately following the ceremony. Plus,
photographers, florists and videographers will only have to set their
equipment and materials up in one location, which could mean discounted
costs for the happy couple.
Consult your reception site to see if this option is available for you.
public. From bridal satin to mother
of pearl buttons, they have so many
things that can make a wedding
party beautiful at a fraction of the
retail cost of most bridal shops. They
will send swatches of the different
bridal fabrics, and they have an
incredible “No questions asked”
return policy.
Here are some other tips for
creating a custom-made dress:
• Do visit bridal shops to see what
silhouette style — A-line, princess,
drop waist, empire — fits your
frame so you’ll have an accurate
idea.
• Make sure you interview several
seamstresses so that you’ll be
working with the one who will best
meet your needs. Get a contract in
writing for the work that will be
administered.
• Visit a fabric shop to actually feel
different fabrics which will help you
choose the right one for the
gown.
• Purchase the undergarments and
shoes you will wear on your
wedding day so that the seamstress
can accurately tailor the dress to the
right size.
• Enjoy the process of designing a
gown that will be truly unique.
